BLACK MIRRORS – LOOK INTO THE BLACK MIRROR [REVIEW]

Con un sonido fuerte, sucio y muy “old style”; desde Bélgica nos llega BLACK MIRROR con una fascinante propuesta en la que si pensábamos que el country, el funk y el metal no se llevaban bien, pues nos demostraron lo contrario. (Quiero destacar antes que nada el increíble trabajo de diseño detrás de la portada. Absolutamente brillante).
Con ❛SHOES FOR BOOZE❜ como opening del disco, tenemos bastante claro el concepto que trae la banda en todo el álbum. Sonidos pesados con toques grunge sumados a la voz inquietante de Marcella Di Troia, logran el efecto de hacerme sentir como si estuviese sentado en una cálida noche dentro de un bar en los años 80.
El paso a ❛FUNKY QUEEN❜ es bastante fuerte y muy muy agradable y se disfruta mucho. Muy movida, con potentes coros además da un gran paso a los sintetizadores en ciertas ocasiones de la canción (sin perder el rumbo del estilo). El sonido de la guitarra es estilo folk y nos sumerge más en la esencia de la banda. Hace honor al título y justamente como single funciona muy bien.
❛ LAY MY BURDEN DOWN❜ no nos hace bajar el flow si no que nos pone mucho más a tono. Es muy divertida, imposible no ponerse a bailar bajo la influencia del asombroso trabajo de la batería. Aquí tenemos un genial solo de guitarra, que además es también bastante entretenido.
Como no todo puede ser baile y adrenalina en ésta vida y necesitamos tomar aire,❛ INNER REALITY❜ nos da la oportunidad de hacerlo. Lenta en ritmo, pesada en sonido. A diferencia de las anteriores, tiene una atmósfera un poco sensual y hasta un tanto atmosférica debido a los agudos que suenan en las partes instrumentales. La suavidad de la voz en los pre coros nos introduce a un mundo de sensaciones diversas por poco más de cinco minutos.
Si te gustó el final de la anterior canción, con él intro de❛ MOONSTONE❜ se nos termina de poner la piel de gallina. La canción en sí es un viaje lento y tranquilo. Aquí la voz pasa a ser secundaria y le dan protagonismo al sucio y rasposo sonido de las guitarras. El uso de la voz masculina aquí como toques en ciertos versos de la canción la vuelve un poco más profunda. Si existiese el término “relax grunge”, probablemente lo calificaría así. Ideal para sentarse solo, y disfrutar de una helada cerveza mientras la escuchas.
Aquí se nos levanta el ánimo, haciendo que❛ GÜNTHER KIMMICH❜ se considere como la más potente, dinámica y entretenida de todo el álbum. Si alguna vez se imaginaron recorriendo ciudades y pueblos en un descapotable rojo, es con ésta canción. Nuevamente nos da muchísima sensación de estar en los años 80.
La secuencia de riffs de guitarra al empezar ❛COLD MIDNIGHT DRUM❜ la convierten en mi absoluta favorita del álbum. Los coros son suaves, cortos y dejan que la música haga su trabajo. Bastante versátil y al final nos dan una sorpresa mostrando la voz de Marcela en toda su potencia.
Aquí nos encontramos con la canción más pesada de la propuesta. Me recuerda mucho a los comienzos de Arctic Monkeys.❛MID SHAPE❜ considero, es la canción que resalta ésta mezcla de un funk divertido con el metal. El solo de guitarra en ésta canción en particular es mi favorito.
❛ TILL THE LAND WIND BLOWS❜ nos metemos en una máquina del tiempo con un country muy oscuro y característico del viejo oeste mediante un intro estremecedor. La canción se expresa así misma como si fuese una leyenda contada por alguien más. El coro se te queda dando vueltas en la cabeza por un buen tiempo, y a mi parecer, la más interesante.
Si hablamos de funk (como el título del álbum), aquí nos dan lo que queremos.❛BURNING WARRIORS❜ honra el concepto del álbum en todos sus aspectos. Tiene todos los elementos anteriores en una sola canción. Fuerte, potente, muy rítmica y versátil. Es la primera vez que escuchamos a Marcela gritar y sostener notas por momentos muy largos (y más encima así de alto). Definitivamente es la mejor instrumentalmente hablando. Nos dan una sorpresa al final cuando tenemos un “bonus oculto”, con la única pieza acústica en la que no necesita más que la guitarra eléctrica y la voz para hacerte viajar (en el mejor de los sentidos).
En sí el álbum es muy muy conceptual y la fusión entre el funk, el grunge y el metal así de ésta forma, nunca la había escuchado. Muy recomendable para variar de las propuestas que escuchamos normalmente. Y definitivamente el título lo tienen merecido: con ésta propuesta son (hasta ahora), los reyes del funk.
With a strong, dirty and very “old style” sound; BLACK MIRROR arrives from Belgium with a fascinating proposal in which if we thought that country, funk and metal did not get along well, they showed us the opposite. (I want to highlight first of all the incredible design work behind the cover – Absolutely brilliant).
With ❛SHOES FOR BOOZE❜ as the opening of the album, we have quite clear the concept the band brings throughout the album. Heavy sounds with grunge touches added to the haunting voice of Marcella Di Troia, have the effect of making me feel like I was in a summer warm night sitting on a bar in the 80’s.
The jump to ❛ FUNKY QUEEN❜ is quite strong and very pleasant. Dynamic with powerful verses also give the the synths the chance to be the attraction of the song (without losing the direction of the style). The guitar sound is kinda folk style and immerses us more in the essence of the band. Honors the title perfectly and just as a single works very well.
❛ LAY MY BURDEN DOWN❜ does not make us lower the flow, but it puts us much more in tune. It is very funny, impossible not to dance under the influence of the amazing drum beat. Here we have a great guitar solo, which is also quite entertaining.
Since not everything can be dancing moves and adrenaline in this life and we need to take a breath, ❛ INNER REALITY❜ gives us the opportunity to do so. Slow in rhythm, heavy in sound. Unlike the previous ones, it has a somewhat sensual atmosphere and even a little atmospheric element due to the highs tunes in the instrumental parts. The softness of the voice in the chorus introduces us to a world of different sensations for just over five minutes.
If you liked the end of the previous song, with ❛ MOONSTONE❜‘s intro we end up getting goose bumps. The song itself is a slow journey. Here the vocals becomes secondary and gives prominence to the grungy and raw sound of the guitars. The use of the male vocals as little elements in certain verses of the song makes it a little deeper. If the term “relax grunge” exists, I would probably rate it that way. Ideal to sit alone, and enjoy a cold beer while listening.
Here the mood rises, making ❛ GÜNTHER KIMMICH❜ considered to be the most powerful, dynamic and entertaining piece of the entire album. If you ever imagined traveling through cities and towns in a red convertible car, it is with this song playing in the background. Again it gives us a lot of feeling to be in the 80’s.
The sequence of guitar riffs at the start of ❛COLD MIDNIGHT DRUM❜ make it my absolute favorite of the album. The choirs are soft, short and they let the music do its job by itself. Quite versatile, and in the end they give us a twist showing Marcela’s voice in all its power.
Here we find the heaviest song of the proposal. It reminds me a lot of the beginnings of Arctic Monkeys. ❛ MID SHAPE❜ I think, is the song that highlights this mix of fun funk with metal. The guitar solo in this particular song is my favorite.
❛ TILL THE LAND WIND BLOWS❜ puts us into a time machine with a very ‘dark country sound’ and perfect elements of the old west feeling through a thrilling intro. The song expresses itself as if it were a legend told by someone else. The chorus are absolutely amazing and catchy, sticking in your head for a long time. And in my opinion, the most interesting in the entire album.
If we talk about funk (like the title of the album), here they give us what we want.❛ BURNING WARRIORS❜ honors the concept of the album in all its aspects. It has all the previous elements in a single song. Strong, powerful, very rhythmic and versatile in all its way. It is the first time we hear Marcela screaming and holding notes for very long moments (and that high). Definitely the best song of the album instrumentally speaking. They give us a surprise at the end when we have a “hidden bonus”, with the only acoustic piece in which you don’t need more than the electric guitar and her vocals to make you travel (in the best of the senses).
The album is very very conceptual and the fusion between funk, grunge and metal in a way like it’s presented, I had never heard it anywhere else. Highly recommended if you want to listen to something different in metal from the proposals that we normally are used to listen to. And definitely the title they deserve: with this proposal they are (until now), the kings of funk.
