DARK SARAH – THE GOLDEN MOTH [REVIEW]
Los dioses finlandeses del metal cinemático sinfónico están de vuelta para terminar oficialmente la primer trilogía llamada “The Chronicles”. Con éste álbum, oficialmente el viaje (que nos han contado a lo largo de dos discos) de Dark Sarah en el alto mundo, llega a su fin. Con “THE GOLDEN MOTH” podemos un disco altamente sinfónico, y lleno de sorpresas y diálogos interesantes. Es una obra teatral llevada al metal en su mejor forma.
El disco empieza con ❛ DESERT ROSE❜ luciendo ambas voces de en una forma dramática y ambiental, como introducción de película. Continúa casi en forma perfecta con ❛ TRESPASSER❜ , donde podemos disfrutar de la riqueza en sonidos del medio oriente en una épica canción que juega con tempos rápidos y lentos acompañados de riffs pesados.
Ya con❛ WHEEL❜ empezamos a hablar de metal como tal. Rápida y dinámica, propone una canción con coros muy pegadizos y aquí las guitarras y la batería son el primer plano, dejando a los sonidos del medio oriente como adornos en la canción pero sin perder la esencia cinemática.
Con❛ MY BEAUTIFUL ENEMY❜ tenemos la primera canción lenta, pero ojo, no es suave. Las voces juntas de Heidi Parviainen y JP Leppäluoto en ésta canción se convergen en una forma muy, muy delicada (y tiene una muy linda orquestación). Al entrarnos a ❛ I ONCE HAD WINGS❜ tenemos un toque diferente, dejamos lo arábico atrás y nos ponemos en tema de circo. Es una canción muy característica de Dark Sarah. Tiene elementos musicales muy sutiles a pesar de ser -a ratos- una canción muy dramática. Aquí la interpretación de este tremendo duo lo es todo. Entramos en una atmósfera más oscura con❛ PIRATES❜, y por primera vez nos introducen los diálogos en las canciones que logran hacernos sentir dentro de una historia. Tenemos hasta ahora, la canción más “cinemática” y un magnífico trabajo. En❛ SKYSAILING❜ nos calmamos un poco y disfrutamos de otra canción más profunda, más ambiental y bajo una tremenda orquestación, que tranquilamente podría estar en una épica película de vikingos.
Y pasamos de forma brusca a una atmósfera más dulce, más tierna; como un musical de disney (no es broma). No me sorprende que la canción se llame ❛ WISH❜ . Una hermosa interpretación que está al nivel de la banda sonora de una película. Instrumentalmente hablando, la joya del álbum. Después un momento tan sublime, nos espera en ❛ THE GODS SPEAK❜ una atmósfera caótica y con los tan esperados Marco Hietala (Nightwish) & Zuberoa Aznarez (Diabulus In Musica) hacen aparición y en un fantástico cuarteto de voces, nos llevan a la cúspide de un viaje oscuro en lo que es la canción más pesada del álbum y épica del álbum.
En❛ PROMISE❜ tenemos nuevamente una canción lenta y pesada, perfecta para calmarnos de la montaña rusa musical que tuvimos en la anterior, y con una conversación musical mucho más tensa y angustiante. Y por fin llegamos a la canción que hace honor al álbum. Sorpresivamente, llegando a ❛ THE GOLDEN MOTH❜ nos encontramos en una pieza con ligeros bits electrónicos mezclados con orquesta y sonidos del medio oriente en una forma más sutil y espectacularmente atmosférica. No hay dramatismo, no hay guitarras, es la calma absoluta del disco. En lo personal, mi favorita. Es el fin del viaje que emprende Dark Sarah y cierra el disco de forma magnífica y etérea.❛ THE GATE OF TIME❜ es el final total con una narración corta que termina de atar todos los puntos recorridos en el viaje que representa el disco.
Como álbum conceptual está no sólo muy bien pensado y hecho, si no que tengo que hacer una mención a la orquesta. Dark Sarah siempre se caracterizó por tener impecables y épicas orquestaciones, pero en éste disco creo que llegaron al mejor punto.

The Finnish gods of symphonic cinematic metal are back to officially end their first trilogy called “The Chronicles”. With this album, officially the journey (that we have been told throughout two albums) of Dark Sarah in the upper world, comes to an end. With “THE GOLDEN MOTH” we can have a highly symphonic album, full of surprises and interesting dialogues. It is a play brought to metal in its best form.
The album starts with ❛ DESERT ROSE❜, showing both voices in a dramatic and environmental way, like film introduction in deed. It continues almost in perfect form with ❛ TRESPASSER❜, where we can enjoy the richness of Middle Eastern sounds in an epic song that plays with fast and slow tempos accompanied by heavy riffs.
With❛ WHEEL❜, we can start talking about metal! Fast and dynamic rhythms, it proposes a song with very a catchy chorus and the guitars and drums here are what you hear first, leaving the sounds of the middle east as ornaments in the song but without losing the cinematic essence.
With ❛ MY BEAUTIFUL ENEMY❜ we have the first slow song, but beware, it’s not soft at all. The voices together of Heidi Parviainen and JP Leppäluoto in this song converge in a very, very delicate way (and it has a very nice orchestration). When we enter ❛I ONCE HAD WINGS❜ we have a different touch, we leave the arabic theme behind and we get into a circus theme.
It’s a very characteristic song of Dark Sarah. It has very subtle musical elements despite being – at times – a very dramatic song. Here the interpretation of this tremendous duo is everything. We enter a darker atmosphere with ❛ PIRATES❜, and for the first time they introduce the dialogues in the songs that manage to make us feel we are within a story. We have until now, the most “cinematic” song and a magnificent work. In ❛ SKYSAILING❜ we calm down a bit and enjoy another deeper, more environmental song and under a tremendous orchestration, which could easily be in an epic film of Vikings.
And we move abruptly to a sweeter, more tender atmosphere; like a Disney musical (no kidding). I’m not surprised that the song is called ❛ WISH❜. A beautiful interpretation that is at the level of the soundtrack of a movie. Instrumentally speaking, the masterpiece of the album. After such a sublime moment, ❛ THE GODS SPEAK❜ waits for us in a chaotic atmosphere and with the long-awaited Marco Hietala (Nightwish) & Zuberoa Aznarez (Diabulus In Musica) make an appearance and in a fantastic quartet of voices, they take us to the cusp of a dark journey in what is the album’s heaviest song (and the most epic as well).
En❛ PROMISE❜ we have a slow and heavy song again, perfect to calm down the musical roller coaster that we had in the previous one, and with a much more tense and distressing musical conversation. And finally we come to the song that honors the album. Surprisingly, coming to ❛ THE GOLDEN MOTH❜ we find ourselves in a piece with light electronic bits mixed with orchestra and sounds from the Middle East in a more subtle and spectacularly atmospheric way. No drama, no guitars, it is the absolute calm of the album. Personally, my favorite.
It is the end of the journey that Dark Sarah undertakes and closes the disc in a magnificent and ethereal way.❛ THE GATE OF TIME❜ is the total ending with a short narrative that ends up tying up all the points traveled in the journey represented by the album. As a conceptual album it is not only very well produced and well done, but I have to make a mention to the orchestra. Dark Sarah was always characterized by impeccable and epic orchestrations, but on this album I think they reached the best point.
