AVANTASIA – MOONGLOW [REVIEW]
El proyecto de rock opera alemán del compositor y vocalista Tobias Sammet, AVANTASIA, está de regreso con un nuevo disco de estudio después de cinco años. ‘MOONGLOW’ es sin duda un brillante trabajo de composición y arreglos vocales. Con brillantes invitados de la escena metalera y folk, lo que este disco tiene para ofrecer es algo que no se escucha todos los días en la radio. Entre ellos destacamos Ronnie Atkins (PRETTY MAIDS), Geoff Tate (QUEENSRYCHE), Michael Kiske (HELLOWEEN), Jørn Lande (ex-MASTERPLAN), Eric Martin (MR BIG) ,Bob Catley (MAGNUM), Hansi Kürsch (BLIND GUARDIAN), Mille Petrozza (KREATOR) y Candice Night (BLACKMORE’S NIGHT).
El disco comienza al mejor estilo de Avantasia: melódico y potente. ‘GHOST IN THE MOON’ me recuerda mucho el stadium rock de mediados de los años 80. La canción se mantiene rápida y entretenida, con loops emocionales donde se dejan ver las tremendas virtudes vocales de Tobias Sammet.
Siguiendo en la misma línea y muy enérgica, ‘BOOK OF SHALLOWS’ nos introduce a un espectacular festín de las voces invitadas. Tiene momentos vocales impresionantes, desde coros épicos, hasta estribillos rasposos, crudos y agresivos. Una de las mejores canciones que he escuchado de Avantasia hasta el momento.
De forma suave y sutil, empieza la canción que le da el título al álbum. Junto a la voz de Candince Night, tenemos en ‘MOONGLOW’ una canción pegajosa muy rica en sonido y mucho más melódica que las anteriores dos.
El disco va muy bien distribuido a nivel de secuencia. Es como si ‘THE RAVEN CHILD’ comenzara en el mismo mood donde la anterior termina. En los primeros minutos nos deleitan con melodías medievales tipo folk para luego mutar a poderosos riffs en las guitarras. Es una canción con multiples momentos y cada uno de ellos es fantástico a nivel musical. La más dinámica del disco, y con una complejidad exquisita. Ahora entiendo por qué fue el primer single (acertada elección).
El álbum en sí es bastante diverso y lejos de seguir una línea, tiene de todo para todos. Por ejemplo, hay canciones como ’STARLIGHT’ nos encontramos con una canción más rápida y que mantiene su nivel de adrenalina en todo momento. Así también en contraste, tenemos en ‘INVINCIBLE’ una cruda y emotiva balada cargada de arreglos vocales y piano (que honestamente la encontré un poco cliché).
‘ALCHEMY’ viene con la fuerza de un tren a despertarnos. Un poco distinta a todo lo que escuchamos anteriormente porque la base enteramente son las guitarras crudas y sucias. Las anteriores canciones tienen una estructura un poco impredecible, pero ésta es todo lo contrario. Eso no la hace mala, porque de hecho, me parece una canción de ‘metal’ simplemente brillante.
‘THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DOWN’ es la que a mi parecer saca lo mejor de Avantasia, y una de las más épicas del disco. Es un poco más power metal que las anteriores, y tiene unos toques electrónicos interesantes que se repiten a lo largo de toda la canción. En ese mismo estilo tenemos también a ‘LAVENDER’ que también me recuerda un poco al metal de los 80’s, aunque debo decir en particular que ésta me pareció un poco de relleno en el disco.
Una de las orquestaciones más épicas del disco la encontramos en ‘REQUIEM FOR A DREAM’ (haciendo honor a la famosa película). Aunque contrario a lo que pensé, los elementos de orquesta no se repiten a lo largo de la canción, si no que quedan en el intro (lo que me deja con una sensación medio incompleta). Sin embargo, es potente y en ningún momento baja el hype. A los fanáticos del power metal sin duda les va a encantar ésta canción. De todos los riffs de guitarra del disco, éste es el que más me gustó, además que me parece tremendo el trabajo detrás de eso.
Pocas veces pensé a Tobías Sammet hacer un cover, y mucho menos de una canción como ésta. ‘MANIAC’ (de Michael Sembello) definitivamente me pareció espectacular. Conservó el estilo (muy de él) de todo lo que ha venido haciendo hasta ahora en sus discos y supo combinarla perfectamente con la esencia de la canción original. Me llama la atención que haya sido la canción cierre del disco, pero me parece un trabajo muy bien logrado.

Composer and singer Tobias Sammet’s rock opera project, AVANTASIA, is back with a new studio album after almost five years. ‘MOONGLOW’ is without a doubt, a brilliant musical composition work full of fantastic vocal arrangements. Along with brilliant guests from the metal and folk scene, what this album has to offer is something you don’t listen to every day on the radio. The guests are Ronnie Atkins (PRETTY MAIDS), Geoff Tate (QUEENSRYCHE), Michael Kiske (HELLOWEEN), Jørn Lande (ex-MASTERPLAN), Eric Martin (MR BIG) ,Bob Catley (MAGNUM), Hansi Kürsch (BLIND GUARDIAN), Mille Petrozza (KREATOR) and the folk singer Candice Night (BLACKMORE’S NIGHT).
The album begins in the best Avantasia’s style: melodic and powerful. ‘GHOST IN THE MOON‘ reminds me a lot of the stadium rock of the mid-80s. The song is fast and truly entertaining, with emotional loops and an amazing vocal performance of Tobias Sammet.
On the same line, mind-blowing and energetic,‘BOOK OF SHALLOWS’ is a spectacular vocal feast. It has impressive vocal moments from epic verses to the very grunge, raw and aggressive style. Brilliant in any possible way.
Smoothly and subtle, we get to listen to the song that gives the title to the album. Joining forces with Candince Night‘s vocals, we have in ‘MOONGLOW’ a catchy song much more melodic than the previous two.
Like a sequence (in therms of mood),‘THE RAVEN CHILD’ starts just as the other one ends. In the first minutes are about a delighting folk/ medieval melodies that eventually evolve in powerful guitar riffs and strong vocals. It’s a song with multiple moments and each one of them is breathtaking. The most dynamic song of the album by far, and with an exquisite complexity. Now I get why it was chosen as the first single.
The album itself is quite diverse as it has many things for everyone’s musical taste. For example, there are songs like ’STARLIGHT’ where you find a metal-type of song faster in tempo and stronger in guitars and a raw and emotional piano ballad on ‘INVINCIBLE’ (which I honestly think is a bit cliché).
Like a massive train coming towards us, ‘ALCHEMY’ comes with strength to lift us up. A little different from everything we’ve heard before because the structure of the song is based almost entirely on raw guitars’ sounds. Also, the previous songs were very unpredictable and this is the opposite. That doesn’t make it bad, because in fact, it’s simply brilliant.
‘THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DOWN’ definitely brings out the best of Avantasia, and to me, is one of the most epic songs on the album. It’s a little more power metal than the others, and has some interesting electronic bits throughout the song. In that same style we also have ‘LAVENDER’ that also reminds me a bit of the metal of the 80’s, although I must say, particularly this one seemed to be a filling song to me.
The most epic orchestration on the album lies on ‘REQUIEM FOR A DREAM’ (honoring the famous movie). I truly thought that the orchestra elements were going to be somewhere else in the song besides the intro, but didn’t happen (which left with a wierd taste). However, it’s powerful and aggressive. Power metal fans will definitely love this song. From all the guitar riffs on the album, this is the one is just a bomb.
I rarely think of Tobias Sammet doing a cover, specially of a song like this one.‘MANIAC’ (by Michael Sembello) is definitely spectacular. He preserved all the Avantasia’s musical elements he has done so far from all his albums and knew how to merge it perfectly with the essence of the original song. it’s a bit interesting that Tobias has chosen this song as the album closure, but aside that is a tremendous work.
