Los finlandeses de WOLFHEART están ahora encontrando su propio sonido, en medio de doom metal melódico y metal extremo. Hoy nos cedieron unos minutos para conversar sobre el nuevo álbum que mañana verá la luz en todo el mundo: “Constellation Of The Black Light”. En una conversación con Tuomas Saukkonen, nos revela detalles de lo que vamos a escuchar pronto y nos adentra un poco más en el concepto del nuevo álbum.

• ¡Hola Tuomas! Gracias por tomarte el tiempo para conversar un poco. El nuevo álbum ya estará en las tiendas en menos de una semana. ¿Qué inspiración tiene el título del disco? (Que está buenísimo, por cierto).

¡Gracias a ti por tenernos! El título es una metáfora sobre una oscuridad interna. Tiene la misma temática de nuestros álbumes anteriores, pero ésta vez quisimos llegar un poco más oscuros y replicar ésta fuerza interna, representada en una constelación.

• Hace poco lanzaron el video para el nuevo sencillo “The Saw”.¿Qué nos puedes contar del video?

Tiene mucha relación con “Breakwater”, donde mi personaje viaja alrededor de Islandia buscando piezas de un hacha entre los bosques, y en “The Saw”, mi oponente construye un arma propia. Lo que quiero mostrar es que todos tienen un lado oscuro. Como lo ves en el videoclip, no siempre es bueno darle cuerda a ése lado porque puedes terminar haciendo cosas jodidas (risas). Pero todos también tienen un lado brillante. La temática principal del disco es la guerra. Como tal, tiene mucha influencia de batallas y pasé mucho tiempo pensando en diferentes escenarios de cómo podría actuar en ciertas situaciones de guerra. Si es que encontraría el coraje de luchar o si me perdería en el lado negativo de las cosas. La guerra es un buen ejemplo de esto. Puede traer el héroe o el monstruo dentro de ti.

• ¡Es un concepto muy interesante! No he visto que otras bandas del género lo planteen de esa forma (normalmente sí hacen énfasis en la oscuridad pero más como algo a lo qué adorar).

Tenemos influencias de muchos géneros, pero no tenemos ninguna posición o movimiento religioso. El black metal suele hablar de Lucifer como la fuente de toda la oscuridad. Lo que yo creo es que la oscuridad es personal. No hay Dios ni Lucifer, los ángeles y demonios somos nosotros mismos. Casi siempre tú escoges en qué te conviertes. La oscuridad es humana, no necesitas ningún dios o poder superior, porque nosotros somos ésa fuente. Todos somos dioses dentro nuestro. 

• Ésa es una ideología muy sólida. Es lo que podría decirse que los diferencia de muchas otras bandas que se inspiran del mismo tópico.

Yo creo que todo ser humano tiene la necesidad de creer en algo, pero no necesita a la religión. La religión como tal es una herramienta de control y de dinero. Todos somos la fuente de poder, energía y oscuridad, y todos tenemos la responsabilidad en nuestras manos. Si haces algo terrible, eres tú, no hay nadie a quién culpar. Entonces ése es el mensaje que queremos transmitir.

• Hablando de tus creencias un poco, veo muchas referencias de naturaleza, paganismo y astronomía en la impresionante portada. Me da mucha curiosidad saber qué hay detrás de ésa composición visual. 

La portada es una representación muy fuerte de nuestro álbum. Si buscas paisajes finlandeses en google, siempre encuentras la aurora boreal, las impresionantes postales navideñas de invierno que funcionan increíble como postales. Lo que ves en la portada es una perspectiva oscura de todo eso, como una dimensión más siniestra. ¿Has visto la película de terror “Silent Hill”?

• ¡Si! Una de mis favoritas.

El concepto de la portada es muy similar. En Silent Hill cuando entras a la ciudad, vuelcas la dimensión y tienes la misma ciudad, pero más oscura. Aquí lo que tienes es la versión “más oscura” de la realidad que vivimos ahora. El mismo cielo, las mismas estrellas, el mismo bosque, el mismo ciervo, pero nuevamente, “más oscuro”. Y el símbolo que usamos es de Islándico, ellos lo usaban como fuerza en las batallas.

• ¡El concepto está genial! Ahora, adentrándonos un poco en el álbum, ¿Hay algo que musicalmente hayan hecho diferente que en los anteriores no hayan experimentado?

Definitivamente tenemos la canciones más rápidas hasta ahora y nuestra canción más épica con la que arranca el álbum: “Everlasting fall”. Cada canción es como la banda sonora de una película con concepto vikingo. El álbum en sí es una sorpresa, está mucho más fuerte que otros discos que hemos hecho.

• ¿Tienes alguna favorita? 

Me gusta muchísimo “Everlasting fall” y “Breakwater”. Creo que es porque son canciones que hemos tocado en vivo, y pudimos palpar mucho la energía en escenario y enriquecer la conexión con ellas.

• ¿Qué canción te emociona tocar en vivo para el próximo tour?

Tengo que admitir que “Everlasting fall”. Con ella abrimos el tour en Estados Unidos, y tiene una parte intro que es acústica, que cuando estás en el show y suena, la gente empieza a contar los segundos hasta llegar a la parte en la que se oyen todos los instrumentos y empezamos la parte pesada.

• ¿Has estado en Sudamérica? Te garantizo que una vez hagas un tour aquí, ¡No serás el mismo!

¡Hemos escuchado eso! Por eso mismo quisiéramos ir. Este tour en Estados Unidos es el primero que hacemos allí, pero estamos muy seguros que con el nuevo album podremos llegar a Sudamérica. Prometemos que estamos haciendo lo posible para lograrlo.

The Finnish band WOLFHEART is now finding their own sound, in the midst of melodic metal and extreme metal. Today they gave us a few minutes to talk about the new album that will be released tomorrow around the world: “Constellation Of The Black Light”. In a conversation with Tuomas Saukkonen, he reveals details of what we are going to hear soon and delves a little deeper into the concept of the new album.

• Hi Tuomas! Thank you for taking the time to talk to us! You have a an album that is about to hit the stores in less than a week. What can you tell me about the inspiration behind the name? (Very cool name btw!)

Thank you for having me! The album title is a metaphor for inner darkness. It goes with the same theme that the previous albums but I wanted to go a little bit darker and replicate even more this inner darkness, represented on a black constellation. 

• You you released the new single, “The Saw”. What can you tell us about the video?

It actually refers to “Breakwater”, where my character travels around Island finding pieces forest ax, and in “SAW”, my opponent he built his own weapon. Everybody has a darker side. As you can see in “The Saw” video, is not always a good idea to put a place to that darkness, you might do really fucked things! (Laughs). But everybody has a brighter side as well! One of the main themes of the album war. The album itself has a battle related topics and I spent quite a lot of time thinking in different scenarios of how would I act in certain situations of battle or war, like if I would find the courage to fight or get lost in the negative side. War is a good example of that, it can bring a hero or a monster from you.

• That’s an interesting concept! Haven’t see it that way from other black metal or doom metal in general (we often see the highlight the “darkness” other ways.

We have a lot influences from other genres, but we don’t have any religious side or movement. Black metal often talks about Lucifer as the source of the darkness. What I believe is that the darkness is personal. There is no God or Satan, the devils and angels are ourselves. Most of the time you make the decision which you become or which take you over. The darkness is humane, you don’t need any god or higher power, actually we are a source of power. Every man is a god or satan of itself. 

• That’s a really solid ideology. That is exactly what makes the difference from any other band from the genre and Wolfheart. 

I think every human being needs to believe in something, but he doesn’t need religion. Religion itself is a tool to control others, and make many. Everybody is the source of their power, energy and evil, and the responsibilities that is in your hand. If you do something terrible things that’s you. There’s nobody to blame, so that’s the message we spread through the music.

• Speaking about your beliefs, I see so many nature, pagan and astronomy symbols on your impressive artwork. I’m curious to know what is the meaning of all that composition. 

The album cover is a really strong representation for the album. If you look for Finnish land in google, all the picture you will see are northern lights, christmas wonderland, star skies really nice picture of winter as good as a postcard. What you see in the album cover is the flip side of all those things. Like the dark dimension. Have you seen the horror movie “Silent Hill”? 

• Yes! Actually one of my favorites!

The concept for the album cover is similar to that. In Silent Hill when you enter the city but you switch dimensions. The same city, but darker. Here in the album cover you have the flip side of the reality we’re living now: same sky, same forest, same deer, but everything darker. The symbol for example is Icelandic. Is what they’ve used as strength in battles.  

• I think that’s a really cool concept! Now, getting more into the new album topic. Is there anything you did in this album that you haven’t done before? 

Definitely has the fastest songs that we’ve ever recorded, the most epic we have with which begin the album, “Everlasting fall”. Every song is like a movie soundtrack with viking concept. The album is a hole surprise, it’s stronger than the previous albums.

• Do you have a favorite song on the album? 

I really really like “Everlasting fall” and “Breakwater”. I think that’s because those are the songs we have performed live, and when we get to see the live energy, the connection grows. 

• What’s the song that excites you the most to play in this upcoming tour?

I have to say “Everlasting fall” because that’s the first song on our setlist in the USA tour, and I really like the acoustic intro and when you are in show you hear this intro and people start counting the seconds until we hit the stage with heavier sound. 

• Have you ever toured South America? I can guarantee once you get to tour it, you’re gonna have a before and after!

We’ve heard it! That’s why we would like to go! This is our first US tour, but we’re really confident we can go to South America with this album. We promise we’re doing our best to make it.
