MARCELA BOVIO – THROUGH YOUR EYES [REVIEW]
Hoy tuvimos el placer de deleitarnos con un tremendo disco, de nada más ni nada menos que de MARCELA BOVIO. La soprano Mexicana conocida por su impecable trabajo vocal en STREAM OF PASSION, AYREON, y MAYAN, nos trae una un viaje musical totalmente distinto y ajeno al metal. ‘THROUGH YOUR EYES’ es una propuesta pura en esencia, que con elementos principalmente melancólicos, nos desnuda el alma en un compilado injusto de tan sólo 11 canciones. Esto es algo que suelo llamar ‘música para el alma’. Con tan sólo la voz, piano, cello y violines, Marcela Bovio consigue erizarnos la piel de inicio a fin.
De forma suave y sutil, la soprano nos introduce al disco a través de una emotiva canción que aumenta en intensidad. ‘EDGE OF THE WORLD’ definitivamente es un fuerte y emocional comienzo.
La influencia de la formación clásica de Marcela es tremendamente notoria en ‘SCIENTIST’. Cargada de muchos juegos rítmicos y dinámicos, tenemos una canción exquisita en todos los sentidos. Para un metalero, el escuchar una canción como ésta en donde la cantante es libre de jugar tanto con voz como desea, es un placer que muy pocos disfrutan.
En un comienzo cargado de nostalgia, viene una de las piezas que más disfruté: ‘ROARDIN’. Un comienzo casi como un score de película seguido de una pegajosa melodía vocal la hace en definitiva una de las joyas del álbum. Además que llegando al final, converge junto a un sutil violín acompañante creando un clímax musical casi perfecto.
Casi como un canto angelical, ‘ICARUS’ nos apacigua con el dulce y envolvente timbre que Marcela posee en una canción que apela a nuestro lado más sublime.
En un juego de diferentes elementos vocales, empieza una de las canciones más dinámicas del disco. ‘HERE TO STAY’ tiene un arreglo de piano que por sí sólo dice mucho. Amaría poder tener una versión solamente piano de ésta canción (o al menos mirar una vez esa partitura).
Adornada con toques de R&B, ’MAGIC POWERS’ es de esas canciones sorpresas que siempre encuentras en un disco. ¡Y vaya grata sorpresa! A pesar de ser muy diferente a lo que veníamos escuchando, al mismo tiempo encaja perfectamente como la secuencia de canciones. Una vez más, Marcela nos demuestra de lo que es capaz como compositora. Lastimosamente es muy corta y nos deja con ganas de seguir chasqueando los dedos.
‘REMEMBER ME’ tiene momentos muy atmosféricos y envolventes. La melodía es muy triste y bastante emocional. Hay momentos vocales muy marcados que demuestran la enorme versatilidad de la voz de Marcela.
Quedé sorprendido de los primeros versos de ‘THORN AND ROSES’ en español para luego continuar el resto de la canción en inglés. Un momento que en lo personal lo disfruté mucho. Aquí hay un trabajo espectacular de parte del violín, que por partes vibras a tal modo que otorga a la canción el dramatismo que merece.
Como fanático del piano clásico, me enamoré instantáneamente del intro de ‘THE SILENCE BEOFRE THE STORM’. Es una canción tremendamente intensa y potente. Si alguien alguna vez dudó de la capacidad vocal de Marcela Bovio, ésta canción es la respuesta a todas sus dudas. Para mí, la mejor del disco hasta ahora.
Nos movemos a un mood más calmo y tranquilo. Una canción mucho más relajada en melodía, muy linda, muy dulce, muy sublime. “INTO HER EYES” nos hace tomar un pausa, respirar y meditar.
El disco toma su cierre con una canción muy profunda e intensa en la lengua materna de la cantante. Aquí, hay un trabajo brillante de la compositora detrás de cada instrumento, de cada arreglo. “DESDE ADENTRO” te lleva en una montaña rusa sonora hasta una cúspide musical al final de la canción que me dejó sin habla y con la piel de gallina. ¡Vaya final!
Tremendo trabajo, tremendo disco. Una vez más, Marcela Bovio nos maravilla con su capacidad de cantante, compositora e intérprete. Sí, intérprete. Porque no todos pueden transmitir tan real lo que cantan, y ella lo hace.

Today we had the pleasure of being delighted by listening to a tremendous artist, such as MARCELA BOVIO. The Mexican soprano known for her impressive vocal work in STREAM OF PASSION, AYREON, and MAYAN, brings us a completely different musical journey away from metal. ‘THROUGH YOUR EYES’ is a pure piece in essence, and by playing with mainly melancholic elements, strips our soul in an unfair compilation of only 11 songs. This is something that I usually call ‘music for the soul’. With only the voice, piano, cello and violins, Marcela Bovio manages to send us chills down our spine from start to finish.
In a soft and subtle way, the soprano introduces us to the album itself through an emotional song that increases in intensity. ‘EDGE OF THE WORLD’ is definitely a strong and emotional beginning.
The influence of Marcela’s classical training is tremendously evident in ‘SCIENTIST’. Loaded with many rhythmic and dynamic twist ‘n turns, we have an exquisite song in every possible way. As a metalhead, listening to a song like this where the singer is free to play as much with voice as she wants, is a pleasure that very few enjoy.
At a beginning full of nostalgia, comes one of the pieces I enjoyed the most: ‘ROARDIN’. A very much film score beginning- it follows a sticky vocal melody that combined, makes it definitely one of the most outstanding songs of the album. In addition to that, as we reach towards the end, the melody converges with a subtle accompaniment violin, creating an almost perfect musical climax.
Almost like an angelic song, ‘ICARUS’ appeases us with the Marcela’s sweet pitch in a song that appeals to our most sublime human side. Playing with different vocal elements, one of the most dynamic songs on the album begins. ‘HERE TO STAY’ has a piano arrangement that by itself says a lot. I would love to have a piano version of this song (or at least to take a look at that score just for a few minutes).
Ornamented with touches of R & B, ‘MAGIC POWERS’ is one of those delightful surprises that you always find on a record. And what a pleasant surprise! Despite being very different from what we were previously listening to, at the same time it fits perfectly as the sequence of the songs. Once again, Marcela proves us what she is capable of as a composer. Unfortunately it is very short and leaves us wanting to keep snapping our fingers.
‘REMEMBER ME’ has many powerful atmospheric element on it. The melody is very sad and quite emotional. There are very vocal moments that demonstrate the enormous versatility of Marcela’s voice.
I was surprised by the first verses of ‘THORN AND ROSES’ were in Spanish. A moment that I personally enjoyed a lot. In this song there is a spectacular violin work, which vibrates in such a way that it provides the song the drama and intensity it deserves.
As a fan of classical piano, I instantly fell in love with ‘THE SILENCE BEOFRE THE STORM’‘s intro. It is a tremendously powerful and intense song. If anyone ever doubted the vocal ability of Marcela Bovio, this song is the answer to all your questions. For me, the best on the album so far.
We move to a softer and warmer mood. A song much more relaxed in melody, very nice, very sweet, very sublime. ‘INTO HER EYES’ makes us take a break, breathe and meditate.
The album takes its closure with a very deep and intense song in the singer’s native language. Here, there is a brilliant work by the composer behind each instrument, behind each arrangement. ‘DESDE ADENTRO’ takes you on a roller coaster melody towards a musical peak at the end of the song, and that personally left me speechless and with goosebumps. What an ending!
Tremendous work, tremendous record. Once again, Marcela Bovio amazes us with her capacity as a singer, composer and interpreter. Yes, interpreter. Because not everyone can transmit what they sing so pure real, and she quit does it.
