Siempre supe que los festivales iban mucho más allá de sólo disfrutar ver a mis bandas favoritas romperla en escenario. Asistir al Aftershock Festival no sólo corroboró esto, si no que me abrió la visión a un concepto mucho más grande de la experiencia que envuelve el asistir a un Festival. Para los metaleros que vivimos en Latinoamérica, especialmente Sudamérica, sabemos lo difícil que es poder ver tantas bandas juntas en un mismo lugar ya que no siempre se cuenta con la logística suficiente para esto y aunque sí, existe una sólida escena que lo demanda, necesitamos que se apueste mucho más por estas experiencias. A pesar que México tiene un par de festivales similares, en Sudamérica sólo están Rock In Rio y el Lollapalooza y aunque son festivales muy reconocidos a nivel mundial, ninguno de ellos maneja la cantidad de bandas y artistas en todo el espectro que el Rock y el Metal tienen para ofrecer en un solo line up.

Y es que ir a un festival de este calibre es muy diferente para quienes no tenemos acceso a esto en Latinoamérica. Yo lo comparo como si fuese el Disneyland de los metaleros: queremos ver a  todas las bandas, comprar todo el merch, ir a todas las atracciones que hay en los alrededores y recorrer todo el lugar y todo al mismo tiempo. Aunque la economía de cada país es distinta, es todo un esfuerzo asistir y nunca sabes cuándo vas a volver a vivir esa experiencia. Y es por eso que si estás pensando viajar éste año en la temporada de festivales y ahora que todos los Line Up están publicados, te traigo éste artículo para que sepas muy bien qué esperar si tu decisión es el Aftershock.

El Aftershock Festival está catalogado como uno de los festivales de rock más grandes en todo Estados Unidos y se hace todos los años en el Discovery Park de Sacramento, California, desde el 2012. A diferencia de otros festivales como el Rock Fest y el Blue Ridge que al igual que el Aftershock también constan de 4 días intensos de mosh, el Aftershock no te da la posibilidad de acampar dentro del lugar. Y se que hay mucha gente que prefiere la experiencia de acampar, pero me parece que tu cuerpo necesita una cama decente después de casi 10 horas intensas de headbanging y de estar de pie bajo el calor aplastante de Sacramento. Sin embargo, esto no te impide disfrutar de toda la diversidad que el festival tiene para ofrecer.

ROCK PARA TODA LA FAMILIA

Es impresionante cómo el Aftershock Festival realmente mueve a todos los metaleros de Estados Unidos. Muchos viajan desde diferentes lugares de todo el país y como para la gran mayoría este es el evento sagrado del año, se programan con muchísimos meses de anticipación para no perdérselo (como funciona más o menos el Wacken Open Air en Europa). De hecho dentro del Festival conocí muy pocas personas que vivían en Sacramento, para mi sorpresa la gran mayoría viajó desde estados mucho más lejanos. Veías caravanas y caravanas de metaleros que llevaban juntos recorriendo todos los festivales de la temporada y familias enteras que se organizan todo el año para viajar y disfrutar del Aftershock como un evento familiar. Esta es una de las grandes maravillas del Aftershock: encontrar desde niños hasta adultos mayores haciendo headbanging en el pit con toda la familia. Y es que el Aftershock logró que a pesar de que el consumo de alcohol y el cannabis estaba permitido dentro del parque, el ambiente seguía siendo seguro para todos.

En un momento mientras esperábamos que Bring Me The Horizon saliera al escenario, yo estaba a 3 personas de la valla y de repente aparece un niño de aproximadamente 12 años con un Red Bull en la mano: “¿Le pueden pasar esto a mi mamá? Es para que aguante en la valla”. Mientras veía cómo la gente le pasaban el Red Bull a la mamá y le hacían barra para que aguante la valla, entendí cómo a todos les importaba que nos llevemos a casa la mejor de las experiencias. Y esto me lleva a hablar de unas de las cosas más lindas y de las más interesantes para hacer durante los shows: el crowd surfing. Aunque hacer esto puede parecer lo más peligroso del mundo, en el festival todos poníamos de nuestra parte para que sea una práctica totalmente segura. Veías a niños y niñas vestidos con el merch de sus bandas favoritas ser elevados en la multitud y vivir el momento de sus vidas. Es así como llegué a la conclusión de que el Aftershock está hecho para disfrutarse solo, con amigos, y por supuesto, con la familia.

ABURRIRTE NO ES UNA OPCIÓN

¿Quieres comer? ¿Quieres bebidas? ¿Quieres estar high? ¿Quizás contribuir a caridad? Definitivamente hay opciones para todo lo que te imagines. Cuando recorres el lugar te das cuenta que tiene espacio para absolutamente todo y si vas por primera vez te puedes sentir increíblemente abrumado por la cantidad de cosas que hay para hacer. Esto es lo que hizo darme cuenta que ir a a un festival no está limitado sólo a las bandas que vas a ver, si no a integrarte y explorar todas las distintas experiencias que vienen con él. No sólo eran bastantes puntos de venta de bebidas (con y sin alcohol) y de comida, si no también tenías para explorar tiendas de ropa, accesorios, discos, joyas (sí, hechas con cuerdas de guitarras), e incluso impartían clases de pintura en el mismo festival. También tenían un spot de consumo responsable de cannabis donde no sólo consumes, si no que te informas del tema en muchos niveles.

Estos ejemplos realmente se quedan cortos cuando te cuento que el festival es enorme. Tenía lugares muy icónicos e interesantísimos para sacar fotos, y también para ubicarte con tus amigos si te perdías. Por ejemplo, tenías tótems de más de tres metros de altura con las bandas que estaban headliners, y esto hacía muy fácil el decidir un punto de encuentro al final de cada show. En la multitud durante los shows se escuchaba mucho “Nos vemos en el tótem de Evanescence”, “mi celular se apaga, nos encontramos en el tótem de Papa Roach”. La ventaja del festival es que tienes tanto por ver, por recorrer, que realmente el aburrirte no es opción. ¿De mis lugares favoritos a explorar? Sin duda fueron la tienda de ropa y Tarot Mortus Viventi y The Pretty Cult.

Y si estabas en la sección VIP tenías aún más beneficios, desde lugares más cómodos para ver a las bandas, hasta cafeterías más rápidas y equipadas con TODO lo que puedes imaginarte. Lugares para cargar tu teléfono y aire acondicionado para descansar y refrescarte.

Algo que destaco aquí es la responsabilidad que tiene el festival para con la comunidad en todo el sentido de la palabra. El momento en que hay bandas que no quieres ver, tienes muchísimas opciones para estar entretenido y al mismo tiempo colaborar con causas importantes. Entre las que destaco y pude ver e informarme al respecto, están: ARTISTS FOR TRAUMA (dedicado a la salud mental de sobrevivientes de trauma militar o durante las guerras), TAKE ME HOME (las ganancias van para ayudar a refugios de animales, rescatistas de animales y animales callejeros) y “FUCK CANCER” (que está dedicado a recaudar fondos para la batalla contra cáncer y ayuda aquellos que quieren obtener un sueño mientras luchan contra la enfermedad).

AGUA EN TODOS LADOS

Si creías que estar en el pit horas bajo el sol era un asunto menor, estás subestimando el poder del calor en Sacramento. Si hablamos que las primeras bandas empiezan a tocar al medio día, y si realmente quieres ver a muchas bandas y prefieres guardar tu lugar desde temprano, vas a necesitar hidratarte pero demasiado. Yo había leído que el Aftershock tenía estaciones de agua para recarga gratuita, pero jamás pensé que hubiesen tantos y en distintos puntos a lo largo del festival y sólo necesitas dar un par de pasos para encontrarte con ellos. La temperatura del agua es PERFECTA. Esto es importante no sólo porque te refresca y te ayuda a combatir la deshidratación por sudar tanto, si no porque el calor es tan fuerte que solo basta con rociar un poco del agua fría sobre tu cuello para recargarte y seguir de pie. ¿Qué sucedía si estaba en el moshpit o cerca de la valla y me sentía deshidratado? ¡Solucionado! Había personal de seguridad en todas las áreas y que todo el tiempo estaban pasando botellas de agua a todos tanto antes del show, durante y en el entre tiempo de una banda a otra. Sólo tenías que levantar la mano. Además que nunca falta quien tiene una botella extra y podía compartirla. Para mí los puntos de recarga de agua fueron clave, ya en la mayoría de los shows, estuve donde la acción y era muy fácil volver a hidratarme y seguir con el siguiente show.

LA COMUNIDAD EN EL MOSHPIT

Aunque he asistido a distintos tipos de festivales y he visto muchísimas bandas en vivo, era la primera vez que veía un número infinito de metaleros en un sólo lugar. Cuando buscamos videos de festivales de rock y metal los primeros resultados que salen siempre son de descontrol, mucha adrenalina y en muchos casos violencia. Y no es que estas características no estén, pero me encontré con algo de lo que casi no se habla o no se muestra: la comunidad que se forma en el moshpit. Por ejemplo todo el mundo habla de lo peligroso que puede ser el hacer crowd surfing en conciertos de una gran magnitud y no me malinterpreten, no desmitifico esto, pero creo que existen maneras seguras de hacer estas prácticas y en el Aftershock me sentí muy confiado de hacerlo más de una vez. Más allá de que el lugar cuenta con mucho personal de seguridad en absolutamente todos los lados listos para recibir a la gente que viene flotando entre las manos, culturalmente la gente está increíblemente dispuesta a pasarte hacia adelante con la mejor de las ondas. Caerte no era una opción, porque veías a todo tipo de personas hacer crowd surfing y todos ayudábamos para que esa persona viva el momento de su vida. Por ejemplo, durante una banda teníamos una persona en silla de ruedas muy cerca de nosotros y todos teníamos la misma misión: protegerla de las incontables personas que venían pasando hacia adelante. Todos colaborábamos no sólo para que la persona que estaba en la silla no sea lastimada y la pase increíble, si no para que la persona que venía flotando por ahí también la pase genial.

En más de una ocasión cuando sentía que no podía más, había alguien que me ofrecía agua, o que me elevaba en el aire para sacarme del moshpit. La actitud de todos en la valla siempre fue de total apoyo. Ese sentido de pertenencia, comunidad y compañerismo es algo que encontré en todo momento. Recuerdo que llevábamos horas esperando a The Pretty Reckless, y una persona que estaba en la valla desde temprano no se sentía bien. Todos acordaron que ella podía ir a recuperarse, tomar algo, descansar y volver al mismo lugar sin tener que luchar en la multitud. Todos respetaron que ella llevaba horas ahí y pudo volver sin problema. Incluso hasta le daban ánimos y le aplaudieron cuando volvió. Aquí es cuando vuelvo a decir: en el moshpit se crean comunidades esporádicas y muy fugaces, a veces duran una canción, a veces un set completo. Todos velábamos por el bienestar del otro para que juntos vivamos el show de nuestras vidas y ese cariño entre extraños se sentía. Y bueno, después de una canción juntos ya no éramos tan extraños. Una de las maravillas del Aftershock es el hacer amigos. Amigos de mosh, amigos de lágrimas, amigos de cervezas, amigos de crowd surfing. De eso se trata, de ser amigos.

PUNTOS IMPORTANTES

De las cosas que más destaco de mi experiencia en el Aftershock, es lo genial que está diseñada la app del festival. Tienes noticias a tiempo real y puedes tener todo el line up y personalizarlo, así como también poner las bandas que quieres ver en favoritos y tener todo listo para correr de escenario a escenario. Todo a un tap de distancia.

Algo que me pareció super acertado es que no hay un sólo lugar para algo, si no que tienes muchas opciones para que no tengas que atravesar el parque entero para algo específico. Por ejemplo los baños, que así como las estaciones de agua, están en todos lados. También destaco que habían puntos de distribución gratuita de tapones para los oídos. Esto es una maravilla porque muchas veces subestimamos el daño que puede causarnos el estar muy cerca de los amplificadores y solo tienes que caminar unos pasos y, ¡vualá! Y por último y no menos importante, es que si estabas esperando una banda y querías estar adelante y esto implicaba sacrificar ver otra, el Aftershock lo tenía todo solucionado: la podías ver en las pantallas.

PARA TOMAR EN CUENTA

Algo que sí me encantaría que cambiase un poco, es que las puertas se abren 10 minutos antes de que toque la primera banda, entonces no te da mucho tiempo de recorrer el lugar antes de entrar. Abrir una media hora antes solucionaría la avalancha de filas interminables que hay al momento de comprar merch. También, asegúrate de buscar un Airbnb lo más cerca de Discovery Park, porque si ganas en una moneda que no es dólar, el Uber te va a costar más que las entradas. Sacramento tiene muy poco transporte público y la verdad es bastante lento y el tráfico en las autopistas puede ser pesado al medio día, y es justo el horario en el que tienes que estar ya en el parque si quieres ver tocar a las primeras bandas. Un dato importante es que a pesar de que hay mucha seguridad, no faltan los robos de celulares al descuido dentro del pit. Aconsejo que estén atentos en todo momento porque siempre se reportan múltiples robos al descuido en los shows. No se trata de ser paranoico, si no de estar atento para que no vivas situaciones que puedan arruinarte la genial experiencia de estar ahí y darlo todo en el pit.

El Aftershock Festival como experiencia también tiene su poesía, su magia. Tiene momentos que se quedan contigo para siempre y estoy seguro que cada año, independientemente las bandas que toquen, vives cosas diferentes e igual de increíble. ¿Mi momento favorito? Poco antes de que empiecen los headliners del tercer día, mientras la temperatura enfriaba un poco, el sol se ponía sobre el escenario KOLAS y yo estaba a un par de personas de la valla. Halestorm en ese momento cerraba su setlist con “The Steeple”. ¡Qué momento! Incontables manos en el aire haciendo horns up, lágrimas corrían, abrazos se extendían entre todos los que estábamos cerca, y las voces de todos se unían en un sólo coro. Sólo se que mi corazón encriptó esa puesta de sol como magia. Y esto fue el Aftershock para mí: magia.

I always knew that going to festivals was something way beyond than just seeing my favorite bands kill the stage. Last year I attended the one and only Aftershock Festival and not only this experience took that concept to a higher level, but it also was a game changer in the way I used to see festivals. For us, the South American metalheads, we know how hard it is to see so many huge metal bands in a single place due to the lack of logistics and even though there is a solid demand for rock shows, we need bigger producers who are willing to support this kind of events.Yes, Mexico has a few festivals here and there and yes, in South America we do have Rock In Rio and Lollapalooza, but as big as they are, none of them have a a huge catalog of rock and metals bands in a single line up as much as Aftershock does.

With that being said, we all can agree that going to these festivals has a different meaning for us because in Latin America is something we don’t see at all. It’s like Disney for metalheads: we want to see all the bands from the line up, we want to buy all the merch, we want to see all the different attractions from the festival and we want to do it all at the same time. Of course, every country has its own different economy but if you live in South America you have to make an extra effort to make it and you never know when you are going to repeat that experience again. So if you are thinking about going to festivals this year and now that all the line ups are up and if the Aftershock is on your list, this article is for you!

The Aftershock Festival is one of the biggest and largest rock festivals across the US and it’s always set in Sacramento, California. We’re talking about 4 full days of rock, metal and all the different attractions you can imagine in a place as big as Discovery Park. Even though we have other similar 4-day festivals like Blue Ridge and Rock Fest where you can actually camp inside, the Aftershock doesn’t give you that chance. I know some of you folks would prefer the camping experience but I do think that after a wild day full of headbanging under Sacramento’s burning sun, your body will appreciate a decent bed and a proper shower. Of course none of this stops you at all from enjoying all the perks of the festivals.

FAMILIES ROCKING OUT TOGETHER

It’s impressive the way the Aftershock gathers thousands of metalheads from across the US. Most of them travel from different states and it’s crazy how for many people this is some sort of the sacred event of the year, so they book the festival even a year ahead. I was surprised that the amount of people I met that actually lived in Sacramento was nothing compared to the ones I met that came from different parts of the US and from the rest of the world. You could spot huge groups and caravans of metalheads jumping from one festival to another, and even families traveling together and experiencing the festival as the main family event. This is one of the best things from Aftershock, you can find from metalhead children to elder people rocking out the pit and wearing their favorite rock shirt. The environment was safe at all times and even though drinking and smoking pot was allowed in the park.

There was a moment where we were waiting for Bring Me The Horizon to come out to the stage, I was 3 people away from the front row, suddenly we see a 12 year old boy with a redbull on his hands making his way to the front row screaming something like: “Can you guys pass this to my mom? She’s at the very front and I don’t want her to pass out”. Not  only all of us helped the kid, but we all were cheering his mom like “hang on, you can got this!” And that was the moment I understood how everyone cared about each other’s experience and how people was committed to help you have a good time there. And this leads me to one of my favorite things about this festival: crowd surfing. We know that doing this might be dangerous, but we were all having a blast helping people bang their favorite song in the air while moving upon dozens of hands. I saw many kids dressed up like their favorite rocker being elevated in air having the time of their lives. That was something I’ve never seen before, and how safe the space was at all times makes me think how amazing is having a festival this big where people from all ages can come.

GETTING BORED IS NOT A CHOICE

Wanna eat? Wanna drink? Wanna get high? Perhaps help charity? Definitely there are options for everything you can imagine. When you get there you can feel a little bit overwhelmed by all the things you want to experience at the same time. That made me realize that going to a festival is not limited just to the bands, but to explore all the different experiences that come with it. You have many options for merch, jewelry, meet and greets and even options for charity if you want to contribute.

This examples are nothing when I tell you that this festival is huge. You had amazing and iconic photo spots with large totems of the headliners that would help you know where you are if you get lost at some point. And those were the perfect spots for gathering with your friends after the shows. You have so much to see that getting bored is definitely not a choice. Fave spots? Mortus Viventi’s tarot clothing store and The Pretty Cult.

Something I would want to high light is the responsibility sense the Aftershock has for the community in all aspects. Yes, it has a lot of attractions and stores but at the same time the festival works with different and important causes such as ARTISTS FOR TRAUMA (dedicated to war survivors’ mental health), TAKE ME HOME (it’s all about animal shelters and animal rescuers) and FVCK CANCER (dedicated to fundraise money for the ones who have a dream they want to achieve while battling Cancer).

WATER EVERYWHERE

If you thought that being on the pit under the sun was a minor issue, you are underestimating Sacramento’s burning powers. The first bands start playing at noon, so If you’re planing to save your spot until the headliners come, you have to stay hidratanted as much as you can. I had read everywhere that Aftershock had free refill water stations everywhere but I never thought that meant LITERALLY EVERYWHERE. You just need a few steps between stages and boom! The water was never warm, it was cold all the time and that was super helpful if you wanted to feel refreshed after a brutal mosh. What happened if you were near the front row and started to feel dehydrated? Problem solved! You had security passing water bottles at all times which was very helpful when you just can’t get out because you would lose your spot. Besides there was always someone who happen to have an extra bottle and is willing to spare.

MOSHPIT COMMUNITY

When we search online videos of rock festivals the first results are always the one showing chaos, drunk people and violence. But on the pit, I found something that the media doesn’t show often: the fleeting community that comes together during the show. For example, everyone talks about how dangerous doing crowd surfing is, but I do think there are safe ways to do it and in the Aftershock I felt I could do this for the first time. It has tons of security guards ready to receive people surfing from different parts of the venue and the most beautiful thing about it is that people is willing to give you a hand and help you had a great time over there! Falling is not allowed. In one time we had a girl on a wheelchair having an amazing time near the front row and we all had a mission: protect her from the crowd surfers and also, making sure that the person we were passing over was also having a good time.

There was more than one time in where I felt I couldn’t do it anymore but there was always someone who helped me passing me water or lifting me up in the air so I could breathe. The attitude on the front row was very supportive. I remember while we were waiting for The Pretty Reckless to come, one of the girls that was in the front row didn’t feel good at all and she needed to get something to drink. As she was there since the beginning of the day everyone showed support and we saved her spot until she was back. That’s what I mean when I say that on the pit the community sense was there all the time. Sporadic friendships are being born, some of them last a song, some of them last a complete set. Some of them last a tear on a ballad, and of them last a crowdsurfing moment. But that’s what Aftershock is about: meeting friends for everything.

The Aftershock festival has its own unique poetry, its own magic. It has moments that stay with you forever. My favorite one? On the third day, the temperature was starting to chill a little bit and the sun was setting over the KOLAS stage and I was a few people from the front row. Halestorm was closing the setlist with “The Steeple”: thousands of hands in the air doing the horns up, thousands of tears were falling down and we were all making a huge hug while singing along the song. What a moment! That day my heart encrypted that sunset as magic. And that was the Aftershock for me: magic.
