LACUNA COIL – BLACK ANIMA [REVIEW]
Los italianos de LACUNA COIL han demostrado a lo largo de sus 20 años de trayectoria que si algo les encanta, es la reinvención musical. Después de haber escalado abismalmente con Delirium (2016), la banda vuelve nuevamente a dejar una vara muy alta con Black Anima. El sonido y el estilo que adquirieron en Delirium, lo solidifican y asientan muchísimo más, llevándonos a un viaje de oscuros contrastes y mucha, mucha riqueza musical.
El disco abre de una forma bastante inusual en comparación a otros discos anteriores de la banda. De forma etérea, dramática y angustiante, es como se nos presenta ‘ANIMA NERA’ como introducción al concepto del disco. Se siente la ausencia de guitarras eléctricas y baterías, y se reemplaza por melodías de piano y sintetizadores, acompañados de un espeluznante arreglo vocal por parte de Cristina Scabbia. ¿Alguna vez han entrado a una casa encantada? Pues este sería el soundtrack perfecto para una historia de terror.
Ahora entramos al metal. La bienvenida nos la da los tremendos guturales de Andrea, que ahora han tomado un protagonismo como nunca antes en discos anteriores. ‘SWORD OF ANGER’ es una muestra de lo que Lacuna Coil se ha convertido a nivel musical: guitarras dominantes, contrastes de voces y un efecto un poco más “sucio” y agresivo.
‘RECKLESS’ fluye de forma mucho más natural desde el principio, y nos deleita con un coro que es imposible sacártelo de la cabeza. Es un poco más dinámica y hasta un tanto divertida en melodía. Me recuerda un poco a ‘TAKE ME HOME’ pero mucho más evolucionado y con más carácter.
Potente, densa, fuerte, agresiva, y muy melódica. ‘LAYERS OF TIME’ es una canción de contrastes absolutos. Los saltos entre los tonos agudos de Cristina y los guturales de Andrea la convierten en la muestra absoluta de lo que la banda ha desarrollado como estilo. Y es que Lacuna Coil es y fue siempre una banda de contrastes, y aquí nos demuestran lo que son capaces de hacer a un nivel mucho más alto. Probablemente la canción más agresiva que hayan hecho en toda su carrera.
Estamos llegando ya a la mitad del disco, y nos encontramos con ‘APOCALYPSE’, una canción un poco más lenta y más oscura, que sin embargo continúa con la misma esencia pesada y potente que las anteriores. Mientras que ‘NOW OR NEVER’ es como un eco del disco anterior, “DELIRIUM” pero con mucha más fuerza y con sonido más sólido, agresivo y melódico. Algo que destaco muchísimo es el hecho de que Cristina tiene probablemente las líneas vocales más agresivas hasta la fecha, aportando a la canción (y al disco) mucho más actitud.
De similar forma ataca ‘UNDER THE SURFACE’ que en un principio es más pesada, y se aligera un poco en los coros. El tempo va acelerándose en los coros y la convierte en un single-type. Y hablando de coros, me atrevo a decir que este es el más entretenido del disco, aunque en otros aspectos, la más débil.
Rompemos su programación habitual para hablar de ‘VENIFICUM’. Y no es para menos, ya que ésta canción es lo cualquier fan de Lacuna Coil siempre soñó. Aquí es donde la banda se reinventa por completo y apuesta por algo totalmente diferente a lo que ha hecho en sus 20 años de carrera. ¿Alguna vez te imaginaste a Cristina cantando en lírico notas agudas? No, pues yo tampoco. Y no de la forma en la que lo hace en ésta canción. Si bien éstos momentos en la canción son pocos y no duran mucho (y tampoco necesitan hacerlo), es un toque que la convierte en una canción más intensa sin robar el foco al estilo que adoptaron en éste disco. La canción es un viaje de ida, muy muy oscuro. ¡Y es fantástico!
‘THE END IS ALL I SEE’ me recuerda muchísimo a los primeros discos de la banda, y en el mejor de los sentidos. Trajeron a la superficie la esencia más pura de la banda y la adaptaron a su nuevo sonido. Aunque a simple escuchada pareciera ser un poco más relajada, su toque atmosférico la transforma en una canción bien intensa. De hecho, es de los mejores del disco. Empezando porque es la primera y única vez que escuchamos de nuevo a Andrea usar su voz limpia, y segundo por cómo está musicalmente (efectos, guitarras, coros). Es una versión más oscura y siniestra de Karmacode. Voy a prender una vela para que sea single.
Con ‘SAVE ME’ tenemos lo que para mí, es la canción más dinámica de todo el disco. Nos activa arremetiendo con coros potentes y pegajosos, además que es mucho mucho más rápida. Destaco un momento específico en donde Cristina Scabbia habla, y nos da un testimonio tan puro, honesto y a corazón abierto que es imposible no quedarte pensando al menos un par de segundos después de escucharla.
La canción de cierre es la que le da el título al álbum. A pesar de que empieza un poco lenta, termina siendo la canción más intensa del álbum. La estructura de ‘BLACK ANIMA’ es muy distinta a las anteriores, no sigue la base de una típica canción si no que progresivamente se va haciendo más potente, más agresiva y mucho, mucho más densa (en algo que los sintetizadores juegan un papel vital). Sin duda la banda ha puesto mucho esfuerzo en los efectos de “ambiente” que están detrás de los instrumentos, lo cual me parece una maravilla. Me atrevo a decir que es la mejor de todo el disco, y definitivamente de las mejores en la carrera de la banda.
En general el disco es una bomba. Si en algún momento se dudó de la capacidad musical y lírica de los tanos, con este disco se despeja. Es un avance en todos los sentidos, y un paso enorme en el mundo del metal. Si bien ya lo habían hecho con Delirium, ésta es una reafirmación de que Lacuna Coil está más pesado y oscuro que nunca.

Italian metal masterminds Lacuna Coil have proved us along with 20 years of career, that they love musical reinvention. After blowing us all with Delirium (2016), the band once again breaks the high standards in sounds and style with Black Anima. They captivate within a journey of dark contrasts and musical madness.
The album starts in a rather unusual way compared to other previous albums.In an ethereal, dramatic and haunting way, ‘ANIMA NERA’ is introduced to us as the opening song and the first bite of the whole album, and what an introduction my friend! It’s quite not like any Lacuna Coil song at all. Even though we might feel the absence of electric guitars and drums, they’re replaced by a dark piano melody, synthesizers, and a fantastic (and creepy AF) vocal arrangement by the great Cristina Scabbia. Have you ever entered a haunted house? Well, this would be the perfect soundtrack for a horror story for sure.
Now here comes the metal stuff! The welcome is given by the terrific and powerful growls from Andrea Ferro, who have now taken a leading role as never before in Lacuna Coil’s history. ‘SWORD OF ANGER’ is a sample of what the band has become musically: dominant guitars, vocal contrast and a slightly more “dirty” and aggressive sound.
‘RECKLESS’ flows much more naturally from the beginning, and delights us with a chorus that is impossible to get out of your head. It is a bit more dynamic and even somewhat fun in melody. It reminds me a bit of TAKE ME HOME ’but much more evolved and with more character.
Powerful, strong, aggressive, and very melodic. ‘LAYERS OF TIME’ is a song filled with remarkable contrasts. The jumps between Cristina’s high tones and Andrea’s rampant growls, together they make this song an absolute sample of what the band has musically accomplished so far. And Lacuna Coil is and always was a band of contrasts, and here they show us what they’re capable of on a different higher level. Probably the most aggressive song they have done in their entire career.
We are reaching the middle point of the album, and we get to hear ‘APOCALYPSE’,, a song a slower in tempo and darker in sound, which continues with the same heavy and powerful vibe as the previous songs. ‘NOW OR NEVER’ is like an echo of their previous album, “DELIRIUM” but with much more power and with more solid, aggressive and melodic sound. Something that stands out a lot is the fact that Cristina probably has the most aggressive vocal lines to date, giving much more attitude to the song and to the album itself.
In a similar way, ‘UNDER THE SURFACE’ attacks. Heavier at first, but it lightens a bit when we get to the chorus, making it a single-type. And speaking of chorus, I dare to say that this is the most entertaining one on the album, although in other aspects, the weakest.
Sorry to interrupt your current reading, but we have have to talk about ‘VENIFICUM’. I strongly believe that this song is what any fan of Lacuna Coil always dreamed about. This is where the band completely reinvents itself and accomplish something totally different from what they have done in its 20 years of career. Did you ever imagine Cristina singing high tones in classical Italian style? No? Me neither. And not like this!!! Although these moments in the song are few they don’t last very long (and do not need to do so), it’s a touch that makes it a more intense song without stealing the focus from the rest of the elements on the song. It’s a one way journey, and very very dark. And it’s fantastic!
‘THE END IS ALL I SEE’ reminds me a lot of the band’s first albums, and in the best way. They brought to the surface the purest essence of the band and adapted it to their fresh new sound. Even though it seems to be a little more relaxed compare to the others, its atmospheric touch makes it a very intense song. In fact, it’s one of the best on the album. It’s the first time and the only time we get to hear Andrea using his clean voice again, and musically (effects, guitars, choirs) it’s a darker and more sinister version of Karmacode. I’m going to pray for it to be the next single / video.
With ‘SAVE ME’ we have what for me, is the most dynamic song on the entire album. It activates us by lashing out with a powerful, faster and sticky chorus. I highlight a specific moment where Cristina Scabbia speaks, and she gives us a some sort of a testimony that is so pure, honest and open-hearted that it is impossible not to get you thinking after listening to it.
– The closure song is what gives the album the title. Even though it seems slower at first it, ends up being the most intense song on the entire album. The musical structure of ‘BLACK ANIMA’ is very different from any other song and it doesn’t follow the basis of a typical metal song. It progressively becomes more powerful, more aggressive and much, much solid (in something that synthesizers play a vital role ). Undoubtedly, the band has put a lot of effort into the “environment” effects that are behind the instruments, which seems wonderful to me. I dare to say that it is the best of the whole album, and definitely the best in the band’s career.
The whole album is a kick-ass bomb. If at any time you doubted the musical and lyrical capacity of this band, with this album it’s all cleared. It’s a huge step in the world of metal. While they had already done it with Delirium, this is a reaffirmation that Lacuna Coil is heavier and darker than ever.
