Es indudable que la industria musical ha sufrido un impacto durísimo durante esta pandemia, sobre todo los músicos y las bandas que viven del tour y de los shows. Sin embargo, esto no ha sido impedimentos para muchos a la hora de inspirarse y lanzar nuevos singles. Tal es el caso del músico y productor So Myung Jung, cuyo proyecto solista llamado “SMJ” acaba de ver la luz acompañado de un EP titulado  “SHIJIU”, grabado en “Fuerte! Audio” (La Paz, Bolivia)

Si bien So Myung ha estado involucrado en muchísimas bandas en Bolivia de diferentes géneros, sus raíces personales siempre terminan en el metal. “El metal siempre fue lo mío, los que me conocen saben que fui parte de la banda de metal Anomalía por mucho tiempo, y si bien participo en diversos proyectos, el metal siempre fue lo mío”.

El EP “SHIJIU” que cuenta con tres canciones, está inspirado enteramente en la situación que estamos viviendo con el COVID-19. “En el EP tenemos el origen del virus, causas, teorías acerca de ello y cómo nos está afectando a todos en el presente llevándonos a un futuro un poco más siniestro. Incluso la portada del EP es una alusión al murciélago y al virus” explica So Myung, quien también nos comenta el porqué eligió el extreme metal como la vía que le da forma a este nuevo trabajo.

“Situaciones extremas requieren música extrema” afirma, el músico, quien no sólo ha trabajado en la composición de las canciones, si no también en el arreglo de cada instrumento, la producción y las voces, trabajando de 10 a 12 horas diarias exclusivamente en el EP “siento que para no haber gritado durante más de una década, lo hice bastante bien, estoy muy contento y muy orgulloso del resultado”.

Cuando So Myung habla de música extrema, no bromea en ningún momento. “SHIJIU” es sin lugar a duda un EP cargado de mucha potencia, con un sonido un poco sucio (característico del old school metal) que está presente en todo el EP. Además de eso, podemos disfrutar de  estupendos solos de guitarras acompañados de muchos momentos up-tempos, y lo mejor de todo es que los riffs de guitarra jamás se terminan: dominan enteramente las canciones. Podemos encontrar tanto momentos progresivos (como en la poderosa “Reign Of Sickness”) como también juegos interesantes de tiempo como en “Black Turns Into Gray”.

“Si antes era complejo conseguir músicos comprometidos para hacer presentaciones en vivo, ahora va a ser más aún dado que no sabemos tampoco cuándo vamos a poder volver a hacer conciertos de que se calmen las cosas con el virus” añade So Myung sobre la posibilidad de hacer shows en un futuro próximo son su proyecto solista. “Lo que sí es seguro es que siempre me van a ver haciendo música, y casi siempre será metal ya que es un género que me ha acompañado por muchísimos años” añade Myung.

We know these are strange times for everybody, but one thing is for sure: from all businesses out there, the music industry has been one of the most heavily devastated by the pandemic situation. Bands, independent artists or even bands labeled by big corporations are making zero income while not being on tour at all (and they probably won’t until late 2021). However, this hasn’t stop many of them when it comes to inspiring and releasing new music even if the timing is not quite the best. That’s is the case of the musician and producer So Myung Jung, whose solo project called “SMJ” has just seen the light while releasing an EP titled “SHIJIU” which was recorded in “Fuerte! Audio” (La Paz, Bolivia)

Although So Myung has been involved in many bands in Bolivia of different genres, his personal roots belong to the metal side. “Metal was always my thing, those who know me know that I was part of the metal band Anomaly for a long time, and although I participate in many other projects, metal was always my thing”.

His brand new EP “SHIJIU”, which has three songs on it, is entirely inspired by the situation we are experiencing with COVID-19. “In the EP we have the origin of the virus, theories about it and how it is affecting us all in the present, leading us to a slightly more sinister future. Even the cover of the EP is an allusion to the bat and the virus” explains So Myung, who also tells us why he chose extreme metal as the genre to release this new work.

“Extreme situations require extreme music”, says the musician, who has not only worked on the composition of the songs, but also on the arrangement of each instrument, the production and the vocals, working 10 to 12 hours a day exclusively in this EP “Even if I haven’t been doing screamos or growls for more than a decade, I feel I did quite a good job and I’m very proud and happy with the result”.

When So Myung talks about extreme music, he really means it. “SHIJIU” is powerful and very aggressive, mixed with a slightly dirty sound (oldschool metal type) in all songs. In addition, we have songs loaded with amazing guitar solos, catchy riffs and many up-tempo moments that make the song everything but a boring experience.

“As far as touring goes, If before all of this it was very difficult to get committed musicians to tour, now it will be even harder since we don’t know when we will be able perform” adds So Myung about the possibility of doing live shows with his solo project. “What is certain is that they will always see me making music, and it will almost always be metal since it is a genre that has accompanied me for many years”, adds So Myung.
