No es sorpresa que ahora los géneros tradicionales del metal ya no sean suficientes para mantenerlo vigente a nivel colectivo. Cada vez aparecen nuevas bandas con combinaciones musicales que jamás pensamos que fuesen posibles, o incluso bandas que todavía se mantienen en el mercado, evolucionan y experimentan con diversos sonidos para tratar de ofrecer música única en esencia. Ése es el caso de LEAH, una cantante y compositora canadiense que empezó con un metal netamente sinfónico y fue mutando hasta llegar a tener un género propio: música de fantasía celta inmersa en rock y metal. Bajo su propio sello discográfico ‘EX CATHEDRA’, LEAH se ha consolidado como un ejemplo de autopromoción y autogestión en la industria musical con cuatro discos de estudio y diversos singles.

Con su más reciente trabajo discográfico llamado ‘THE QUEST’ ya disponible a nivel mundial, LEAH conversó en exclusiva con nosotros para contarnos un poco sobre sus últimas composiciones, inspiración y hasta de su experiencia como artista independiente.

• Como artista independiente y con tres álbumes de estudio previamente lanzados por ti misma, ¿Qué cosas has aprendido de esas experiencias que te hubiese gustado saber antes?

He aprendido que puedes hacer muchas cosas, pero no todo por ti mismo. Aprendí hasta qué punto soy buena, y a partir de cuándo necesito realmente ayuda. Ahora alguien más gestiona las áreas donde necesitaba ésa ayuda y ha hecho una tremenda diferencia en mi productividad y además me hace que mi vida sea más entretenida cuando lanzo un disco nuevo.

LEAH también afirma que desde antes de dar sus primeros pasos en la música, ya sabía la dirección que eventualmente tomaría: “Una vez fui expuesta en mi adolescencia a bandas como Nightwish, Within Temptation y Lacuna Coil. Ahí supe que ése sería mi camino”.

• ¿Será en un futuro el viajar con tus hijos un requerimiento para tocar a los países a los que vayas? 

Depende totalmente en cómo se plantee. Si fuese una nacional, me imagino que sí los llevaría conmigo. Es sólo que no estoy dispuesta a sacrificar el ser madre por mi propia carrera – y ellos aman viajar, ver cosas nuevas y conocer nuevas personas. Si fuese un sólo show o un festival, quizás sea diferente. 

• Además de la música, has llegado a alcanzado una conexión muy fuerte con tus fans compartiendo tus experiencias personales, dificultades e incluso con tus hobbies favoritos. Como artista, ¿Cuán importante crees que es el mostrarte así con tu público y tus fans?

Es todo. No puedes esconderte detrás de un muro de misticismo si quieres tener éxito. El solo ser tú mismo completamente auténtico hace que conectes con más personas y ganes mucha más lealtad en ellos.

LEAH también nos da detalles sobre la creación de algunas de las canciones y las diferentes decisiones artísticas que tomó durante el proceso de creación y edición. “No fue tan difícil escoger ‘Edge Of Your Sword’ como primer sencillo. Sentí que era una canción muy fuerte para un primer impacto por su tiempo progresivo que es épico en algunas partes. ¡Además que te pone de buen humor y tiene sonidos estilo power metal!”.

LEAH también destaca que hubieron canciones que no fueron del todo fácil, que hubieron canciones muy desafiantes: “Definitivamente ‘The Quest’ lo fue tanto en la producción, composición musical y a la hora de escribir la letra. ‘Edge Of Your Sword’ también fue un poco compleja a nivel vocal, pero me ayudó a construir la confianza en mí misma”.

• Tienes una de las canciones más poderosas de tu carrera en este nuevo álbum: ‘Abyss’. Y además, la única en tener arreglos corales. ¿Podrías contarnos un poco más de ella?

¡Claro! La llama la “canción experimental”. Fue muy raro cuando la escribí por primera vez y no supe qué pensarían los demás de ella. Ahora es muy curioso cómo sigo escuchando que se ha convertido en la favorita de muchísimos fans.

Una de las cosas más curiosas del disco, es que la balada ‘The Water Is Wide’ es la que cierra el disco sin guitarras ni baterías, sólo la voz de LEAH y sonidos etéreos. LEAH comenta: “No sabía cómo iba a cerrar el album o el orden de las canciones hasta el último minuto. Aunque siempre supe que quería algo distinto, crudo y emocional en algún punto. Escogí ésta canción escocesa que es un poco folk, y simplemente sentí que era lo que buscaba”.

• ¿Fue difícil trabajar con músicos de todo el mundo para éste disco?

Para nada. Ahora es tremendamente fácil hacerlo. Es una cuestión de que todos graben en sus propios estudios, y envíen sus archivos al productor. ¡Es genial todo lo que hemos logrado con la tecnología! 

También, LEAH nos ha contado un poco sobre lo que fue trabajar con músicos alrededor del mundo y cómo ellos influyeron indiscutiblemente en el resultado final del disco “Troy Donockley le dió un toque más folk y esa fue la dirección que quería tomar desde un inicio y quedé encantada con lo que él aportó. Trajo la magia consigo y la plasmó en el disco. Además siento que los arreglos vocales son muy fuertes, y amo todas las harmonías que las acompañan. Todo eso tomo un gran esfuerzo, y fue Oliver Philipps (productor) quien me ayudó con un fantástico trabajo en esos arreglos”.

Hablando sobre el futuro de su carrera musical, y un posible videoclip, LEAH nos dice: “¡Me encantaría hacerlo! Pero no puedo prometer nada. Quizás en un futuro próximo. Por el momento seguiré creando. He estado archivando algunas ideas creativas a lo largo del verano y espero poder sentarme y finalmente volver a escribir y ponerlas en estudio”.

It’s no surprise that traditional metal is just no longer enough to keep it alive and trendy. There are a lot of new bands that appear with musical combinations that we never thought were possible, or even old bands are coming back while evolving and experiment with different sounds in order offer music unique in essence. And that is the case for the Canadian singer and songwriter, LEAH. She started with a purely symphonic metal and was mutating to have her own genre: Celtic fantasy music immersed in rock and metal. Under her own record label ‘EX CATHEDRA’, LEAH has established her career as an example of self-promotion and self-management in the music industry with four full length studio albums and several killer singles.

With her most recent album called ‘THE QUEST’ (already available worldwide), LEAH spoke in exclusive with Pasillo Under, giving us details from the album and her experience as an independent artist.

As an independent artist and having 3 previous albums released all by yourself, what are the things you’ve learned from those experiences that you wish you did before?

I’ve learned that you can do a lot, but you can only do so much yourself. I’ve really learned what I’m good at and where I need help. I now outsource help where needed and it’s made a huge difference in my productivity and also just makes life more fun when releasing an album.

LEAH also tells us that before taking her first steps in music, she already knew the direction she would eventually take: “After I was exposed in my late teens to bands like Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, and others, I knew metal was going to be part of my path”.

 Will it be (in a future) a requirement for you to tour with your kids to wherever you need to travel and perform?

It totally depends on what we put together. If it’s some kind of national tour then I imagine I’d bring my family with me. I’m just not willing to give up being a mother for my own career – and they love to travel and see new things and meet new people. If it’s just a random show or a festival, that might be different.

Aside the music, you’ve reached a certain level of connection with your fans through your personal experiences, struggles, desires and even with just sharing your hobbies. As an artist, how important do you think to share those things to your fan base?

It’s everything. You can’t hide behind a wall of mystique anymore if you want to succeed. Just be yourself and completely authentic and you’ll connect with more people and gain much more loyalty.

LEAH also gives us details about the creation of some of the songs and the different artistic decisions she made during the launch of the new album: “It wasn’t too hard. I felt that song was a strong first song to release because it’s uptempo, kind of epic in places, really sets a mood, and also has some power metal bits in there”. She also highlights that there were songs not entirely easy, and some of them were very challenging: “Definitely The Quest, by far, from a production and writing stand point. It just wasn’t an easy song. From a vocal stand point, I had a few moments in Edge of Your Sword which I worked at to build my confidence”.

You have the of the most powerful and epic orchestrated song in the album, which is “Abyss”. But also, the only one that has choirs on it!

Yes! I call it the “experimental” song. It was really weird when I first wrote it and didn’t know what anyone would think of it. Funny, now I keep hearing it’s become a favorite to many fans.

One of the most curious things on the album, is that the ballad ‘The Water Is Wide’ closes the album without guitars or drums, only the voice of LEAH and soft ethereal sounds. She says: “I didn’t know how I would end the album, or the order the songs until the last minute. I just knew I wanted something very stripped back and raw and emotional at some point. I chose this old Scottish folk song and it just felt right”.

Was it hard to work with musicians all over the world?

No – it’s very easy and straightforward these days. It’s just a matter of everyone recording in their own home studios and sending files over to the producer. It’s pretty amazing what we can accomplish these days!”. Also, Leah tells us a little bit about the collaborations she made with musicians around the world and how they influenced the final result of the album: “Troy Donockley gave a folk touch and I was thrilled with what he added. It really took the magic up a few notches for me. I feel that the vocal arrangements are really strong and I love all the harmonies going on. That was really a huge effort between myself and Oliver Philipps who did a great job helping arrange all the parts”. Talking about the future and a possible music video, LEAH adresses: “I’d love that. No promises, but hopefully in the near future. I’ll keep creating! I have been storing up a well of creative ideas all Summer and hope to finally get settled and get back to writing”.
