Tuvimos el honor de conversar con la talentosísima y carismática MARCELA BOVIO (vocalista de Stream Of Passion y conocida en la escena metalera por sus grandes trabajos vocales en bandas como Mayan y The Gentle Storm). Con su reciente disco “THROUGH YOUR EYES” estrenado hace casi un mes, Marcela nos comenta un poco sobre la dirección artística que está tomando, sus planes a futuro y nos da detalles exclusivos sobre lo que fue la composición del nuevo álbum.

• ¡Hola Marcela! Muchísimas gracias por tomarte el tiempo de conversar con nosotros. Estábamos ansiosos esperando a escuchar tu nuevo material ya que no está ligado al metal. ¿Qué te llevó a hacer éste segundo disco con influencias netamente clásicas?

¡Las gracias a ti! Bueno, pues a mí me gustan muchas cosas diferentes. Y realmente eso era lo que buscaba al hacer un disco de solista y hacer algo un poco fuera de lo que ya estaba haciendo con Stream Of Passion. Decidí hacer algo acústico porque primero que nada pues, la música clásica para mí es una influencia muy grande. Y segundo porque me gustaba la idea de grabar algo en vivo en el estudio. En una producción de un disco de metal todo se graba en partes; primero la batería, luego la guitarra y así. En cambio, el grabar acústico como lo hice con estos discos por ejemplo es muy diferente. El sonido es más orgánico, hay metrónomos todo es más íntimo. Eso es algo que me gusta mucho.

• ¿Grabaste en un estudio junto a otros artistas?

 Hay un estudio aquí en Holanda donde he grabado muchísimo material tanto solista como de las bandas, y bueno, pues soy cliente frecuente (risas). Ahí también grabo mis proyectos personales y algunas voces para proyectos a los que me invitan. Ahí me siento como en casa, ¿Sabes?. Fue una decisión muy fácil. 

• Algo que me llamó mucho la atención, es que hace un tiempo hiciste una campaña en la cual los fans podían enviarte historias muy personales que podían servirte de inspiración a la hora de hacer éstas canciones. ¿Cómo influyó todo esto en tu vida personal y en la composición del álbum?

Te cuento. Nueve de las canciones son basadas en un tema que me dio justamente una de ésas personas. Ya estaban escritas durante la campaña de mi primer disco solista. Como nueve canciones me pareció muy poquito, tomé otros dos temas y por eso se me ocurrió lanzar el concurso. Escogí al azar, porque no se me hizo justo escoger la que más me gustaba, y quería que todos tengan la misma oportunidad. Pero en un momento me puse a leer todo lo que me habían mandado y fue muy abrumante que confiaran en mí a ese nivel.

• Impresionante. Realmente tienes una conexión muy fuerte con tus fans.  

Mucho más de la que yo pensaba. Se me hizo súper lindo que la gente haya sido muy honesta y muy abierta compartiéndome cosas muy difíciles y sentimientos muy privados. Por otro lado me sentí muy identificada con los temas que me compartía la gente. Me di cuenta que teníamos mucho en común, ¿Sabes? Mucho más de lo que pensamos.

• Así es. Totalmente de acuerdo. Hablando un poquito más a profundidad sobre los temas, una de las canciones que más me intriga es “THORN AND ROSES” que está en inglés y español. ¿Podrías contarnos un poco sobre ésa decisión y sobre la dinámica de la canción? 

Pues, ésta canción es para una chica hispano parlante que fue quien me aportó con el tema y pensé que sería cool que tenga partes en español. Cuando estoy escribiendo una canción, la melodía más o menos me dice qué idioma tiene que ser. Empecé en español y luego al poco rato, la siguiente melodía surgió como en inglés, y termino siendo una mezcolanza (risas).

• ¡Pero el resultado es fantástico! Es una de las que más me gusta del álbum. Hablando de español, ¿Podrías comentarnos un poco sobre la canción cierre, “DESDE ADENTRO”?

Esa canción es el resultado de uno de los temas que escogí al azar de todos los que me mandó la gente. Me lo envió un chico que se llama Jorge (Chile). Y me dijo “sería bueno escribir una canción del momento que trate de cuando tu mismo encuentras la fuerza para salir de un momento difícil desde tu propia voluntad interna sin factores externos. De descubrir en ti mismo la capacidad de sobreponerte de un momento difícil y salir adelante”. Hay una flama y una energía dentro de todos nosotros que nunca se puede apagar. 

• ¡Genial! ¿Y planeas tener más canciones de ésta?

¡Por supuesto! Es algo que siempre sale de alguna u otra forma (risas). Como te digo yo siempre dejo que las canciones me digan en qué idioma tienen que ser, y siempre hay buen momento para una canción en español. 

• ¿Es como una especie de intuición musical? 

¡Pues algo así! Cada idioma tiene un ritmo y una musicalidad diferente y combinarlas es lo más divertido del proceso. 

• ¿Hay alguna canción favorita de tu nuevo disco?

¡Es como escoger entre los hijos! No puedes (risas). “Here To Stay’ me gusta mucho porque es la canción en la que invité a cantar Diana,  mi hermana. Teníamos años que no cantábamos juntas y me dio mucho gusto el escuchar nuestras voces juntas. Casi casi suelto una lagrimita en el estudio. Me encantó como quedó.

• Ahora que tienes varios proyectos como Mayan y Ayreon, ¿Llenan tu faceta metalera lo suficiente? ¿Quizás hay algún proyecto en el que aún estés trabajando?

La verdad hay muchas cosas (risas). Pero con respecto a tu primer pregunta, pues no del todo. En el disco de Mayan colaboré muchísimo con la composición, pero para mí no es lo mismo yo componer mis propios temas y ser yo quien decida qué rumbo van tomando mis canciones. Tengo un proyectito secreto del que no puedo hablar ahora, pero espero que pronto sí. 

• Cambiando un poco la dinámica, hemos pedido a la comunidad metalera que nos manden sus preguntas para ti, y hemos escogido tres preguntas (una por fan, un fan por país). ¿Lista?

¡Súper! 

• Flavia Geninazzi de Uruguay pregunta: “¿Qué posibilidades hay de un tour en Sudamérica? Ya sea con Mayan o como promoción de tu disco solista”.

Uy pues a mí me encantaría. Yo creo que lo tengo que intentar. Tengo pendiente una aventura en Sudamérica. Con Mayan aún estamos viendo fechas, así que cruzamos los dedos. Es que no hay nada como Latinoamérica, es el mejor público. A México si vamos, de hecho tenemos 3 fechas y es algo que me tiene muy contenta. 

• Me imagino que como hispanoparlante, debe ser otro nivel para ti tocar en Latinoamérica por el público. 

Es que para el mundo entero es otro nivel ¿sabes? Nadie en el resto del mundo entiende, que la forma en que los latinoamericanos vivimos un concierto es inigualable. Esa energía no la encuentras en ninguna otra parte. Cuando iba a conciertos en México hace muchos años, si no salía destrozada, sin vos de tanto gritar y con moretones por estar en el mosh pit, quería decir que no había disfrutado del concierto como se debe (risas). No es sorpresa que ahora muchas bandas escogen Latinoamérica para grabar sus shows.

• Jeannette Martinez de Chile pregunta: “Con la noticia de que Mayan va a tocar en el 7.000 Tons Of Metal, me encantaría saber: ¿Es la primera vez que estarás en un crucero metalero? ¿Qué esperas del festival?”.

We had the honor of talking to such a talented and charming MARCELA BOVIO (vocalist of Stream Of Passion and known in the metal scene for her great vocal work the bands Mayan and Aeryon). With her most recent album “THROUGH YOUR EYES” released almost a month ago, Marcela tells us a bit about the artistic direction she is taking, her plans for the future and exclusive details about what the composition of this new album.

• Hello Marcela! Thank you very much for taking the time to talk a little bit. We were anxiously waiting to hear your new material because it’s not linked to metal at all. What led you to make this second album all with classic music influences?

Thanks to you! Well, I like many different things. And really that was what I was looking for by doing a solo album and by doing something a bit out of what I was already doing with Stream Of Passion. I decided to do something acoustic because first of all, classical music for me is a very big influence. And second because I liked the idea of recording something completely live in the studio. In a metal production everything is recorded in parts; first the drums, then the guitar and so on. In contrast, the acoustic recording I did with these albums, for example, is very different. The sound is more organic, there are metronomes, everything is more intimate. That’s something that I like very much.

• Did you record it in your studio with other artists?

 There is a studio here in Holland where I’ve recorded a lot of material, both solo and with the bands. And well, I’m a frequent customer (laughs). I also record my personal projects and some voices for projects to which I am invited to. That’s where I feel at home, you know? It was a very easy decision.

• Something that caught my attention, is that a while ago you did a campaign in which fans could send you very personal stories that could be of inspiration for future songs. Was this album the case? How did all this stories took part in your personal life and the composition of the album?

Ok, here’s the thing. Nine of the songs are based on a specific theme that one person gave me. They were already written during the campaign of my first solo album. But nine songs seemed very little to me, so I took two other songs and that’s why I decided to launch the contest. I chose randomly, because it was not fair for me to choose the one I liked the most, and I wanted everyone to have the same opportunity. But at one point I began to read everything they sent me and it was very overwhelming that they trusted me at that level.

• Awesome. You really have a very strong connection with your fans.

A lot more than I thought. It was super nice that people have been very honest and very open by sharing very difficult things private feelings. On the other hand I felt very identified with many situations that people shared with me. I realized we had a lot in common, you know? Much more than we think.

• Totally! Speaking about the songs, I found “THORN AND ROSES” a very interesting one, mixing English and Spanish. Could you tell us a little about that decision and about how the song develop?

Well, this song is for a Spanish speaking girl who was the one who brought me the theme, and I thought it would be cool to have parts in Spanish. When I’m writing a song, the melody pretty much tells me what language it has to be. I started in Spanish and then after a while, the following melody came out in English, and the song ended up being a mix (laughs).

• But the result is fantastic! It’s my favorite from the album. Speaking of Spanish, can you tell us a little more about the ending track, “DESDE ADENTRO”?

That song is the result of one of the themes I chose randomly. It was from a Chilean guy named Jorge. Later on he told me “it would be cool to write a song of the moment when you find the strength to get out of a difficult moment finding your own inner force, without any help of external factors and just discovering in yourself the ability to overcome and move on”. There is a flame and an energy within all of us that will never fade.

• Cool! Do you plan to have more songs of this one?

Of course! It’s something that always comes out in some way or another (laughs). As I say, I always let the songs tell me in what language they have to be, and there is always a good time for a song in Spanish.

• Is it like an intuitive writing? 

Well, sort of! Each language has a different rhythm and musicality, combining them is the funniest part of the process.

• ¿Do you have a personal favorite from the new album?

It’s like choosing between your own children! You just can’t (laughs). I really like “Here To Stay” because it’s the song I invited Diana (my sister) to sing with me. We haven’t sing together for years and I was so happy to listen to our voices in the final mix, almost almost cry in the studio. I love how it ended up.

• Now that you have several projects like Mayan and Ayreon, is your metal side satisfied enough? Or maybe there is a project that you’re still working on?

The truth is that work on many things (laughs). But with respect to your first question, well not at all. On Mayan’s album, I collaborated a lot with the composition, but for me it is not the same as composing my own songs and being the one who decides and control what direction my songs are taking. I have a secret project that I can not talk about now, but I hope soon I can tell everyone.

• Flavia Geninazzi from Uruguay asks: “What are the chances for a South America tour? Either with Mayan or on your own”.

Oh, I would love it. I think I have to try. I have an adventure in South America on my to-tour list. With Mayan we are still seeing dates, so let’s cross our fingers. There’s nothing like Latin America, it’s the best crowd. In fact we’re going to To Mexico because we booked already 3 dates and that’s something that makes me truly happy.

• I can imagine that playing in South America being a Spanish-speaker must be a surreal experience.

For the whole world is! You know? Nobody in the rest of the world understands that the way Latin American people live a concert is unique. You can’t find that energy anywhere else. I used to go to concerts in Mexico many years ago, and if I didn’t come back tired, without voice and with bruises for being in the mosh pit, it meant that I didn’t enjoyed the show as good as I should (laughs). It’s no surprise that now many bands choose Latin America to record their live shows.

• Jeannette Martinez from Chile asks: “With the news that Mayan is going to play in the 7,000 Tons Of Metal, I would love to know: Is this the first time you’ll be on a metal cruise? What do you expect from the festival?”
