LEAH – ANCIENT WINTER [REVIEW]
La industria musical es tan amplia y diversa ahora, que ya no sigue las mismas reglas que hace 10 años atrás. Combinaciones de estilos nunca antes escuchado emergen todo el tiempo, y vemos a muchos artistas reinventándose con cada álbum. En 2012, la escena metalera vio nacer a LEAH, una artista independiente que ha estado en una metamorfosis musical hasta llegar a consolidarse como el referente número uno de ‘Celtic fantasy metal’. Como una artista que no se apoya en una disquera sino en sus fans, reemplaza el atractivo del tour y los shows en vivo por experiencias musicales más personales e íntimas con su comunidad. Ésta vez nos presenta una propuesta que se aleja un poco de las guitarras y los redobles, y se acerca a su más pura esencia de fantasía y folk. ‘ANCIENT WINTER’ una combinación mágica entre esa esencia folk, lo sinfónico y lo atmosférico. Abre la puerta a muchos submundos, facetas y texturas musicales; todas cargadas con fantasía y sueños que cobran vida a través composiciones épicas.
Entre las participaciones de artistas del mundo del metal, podemos destacar la de Troy Donockley (Nightwish) Anna Murphy (Cellar Darling, ex Eluveitie), Shir-Ran Yinon (Eluveitie), Oliver Philipps y Rupert Gillett.
Con una una dulce y sutil bienvenida, ‘THE WHOLE WORLD SUMMONS’ nos da una vibra de fantasía invernal en su máxima expresión. Si bien es la primera muestra, nos da una clarísima idea de lo que trae resto del disco. Es muy atmosférica y rica en sonidos, tanto que pinta un escenario mágico lleno de hielo y nieve con cada sonido de campanas. ‘LIGHT OF THE WORLD’ es probablemente una de las canciones más versátiles del álbum, y definitivamente la más intensa. Tiene momentos donde domina muchísimo la esencia musical del medio oriente, que nos eleva a un mágico clímax instrumental, para luego aterrizar en la delicada melodía vocal de los coros.
En una bomba cinemática y celta, el mundo más antiguo que puedas imaginarte cobra vida en la emocional ‘UPON YOUR DESTINY’. Empieza muy sutil y casi etérea, intensificándose luego en los coros. Ésta canción se aleja un poco de la vibra navideña y nos adentra más en un escenario medieval lleno de historias y fantasías, contadas a través de sonidos de flautas y gaitas. La orquestación es absolutamente fantástica, tanto que es digna de ser el soundtrack de una película épica al mejor estilo de ‘Juego De Tronos’.
‘REDEMPTION’ por el contrario, muta un poco más a lo folk y celta, recordándonos los orígenes del estilo musical que LEAH adoptó a lo largo de los años. ‘THE MESSENGER’ es una espectacular canción de transición, en donde se empieza a sentir el invierno otra vez acercándose al escuchar el mejor arreglo vocal que LEAH ha hecho hasta la fecha. Tan sutil, tan etérea que no necesita más que la voz para ponerte los pelos de punta y hacerte sentir que estás flotando en el cosmos.
Llegó el frío y la emoción navideña nos lleva lo más al norte posible. La rendición de los cánticos sagrados ‘GUADETE’ y ‘PER NATUS’ combinan lo folk, lo celta y la fantasía del mundo medieval nórdico. ¿Alguna vez pensaste escuchar villancicos cinemáticos? Con un estilo mucho más clásico y tradicional, nos transportan a escenarios mágicos a través de arreglos corales y orquestaciones magníficas. El disco cierra con todas las facetas y texturas musicales en una sola. ‘NOËL NOUVELET’ es una canción que alterna entre momentos vocales dramáticos, toques orquestales sutiles y transiciones musicales oscuras e intensas. Y eso es lo que la distingue de los típicos villancicos navideños.
Cuando ya estás posicionado en el metal, es difícil y riesgoso hacer algo diferente. Sin embargo, LEAH capturó la hermosa esencia musical que poseen todos sus discos y la llevó a un siguiente nivel, demostrando que no todo es guitarras. Sin duda, ‘ANCIENT WINTER’ es un increíble viaje entre sueños y fantasías, y el break perfecto que necesitamos del rock y del metal.

New styles and combination emerge all the time and we see many artists and bands reinventing themselves with each release. On 2012, the metal scene saw LEAH’s musical career born, and independent artist that has been on a musical metamorphosis over the past years until becoming herself a reference under the ‘Celtic fantasy metal’ style. As an artist that has no label but supportive fans, she replaces the touring and the live shows for new musical experiences throughout a more personal and intimate experience with her fans.
This time she’s presenting us something totally different and slightly away from guitars and heavy based songs, and approaches her music more into her most pure Celtic-fantasy essence. ANCIENT WINTER’ is a magical combination between that Celtic-fantasy essence and the symphonic atmosphere. It opens up different sub-worlds, faces and musical textures, all of them loaded with the ideal dreamy christmas concept coming to life through epic compositions.

With a sweet soften welcome, ‘THE WHOLE WORLD SUMMONS’ gives us a winter fantasy vibre on its highest possible expression with every bell’s ring. Even though is the first bite, you see a clear idea of what the album is coming up with. Very atmospheric and rich in sounds, the song paints us a magic scene full of ice and snow at first listen. ‘LIGHT OF THE WORLD’ is probably the most versatile song on the album, and definitely, without a doubt, the most intense on its own. It has strong moments of middle eastern feeling that lifts us up to a magical instrumental climax and then lands us on the delicate vocal melody within the chorus. On a cinematic and Celtic bomb, the most ancient world you could’ve ever imagine comes to life on the emotional ‘UPON YOUR DESTINY’. It starts very subtle and almost ethereal, intensifying itself as the song develops. This one is a bit less “Christmassy”, but has more of a folk air, entering us into a Celtic world full of stories and fantasies, all of them told through pipes and flutes. The orchestration of this one is absolutely fantastic, so much that it’s worthy of being used a soundtrack of a ‘Game Of Thrones’ type of movie.
On the other hand, ’REDEMPTION’ evolves into a more folkish style, remaining us LEAH’s musical origins. ‘THE MESSENGER’ is an spectacular transition song, in which you can feel the winter arriving while you listed to the most epic vocal arrangement LEAH has done to date. Is so subtle and ethereal that you can see yourself floating in the crispy air. Chills down your spine people!
The winter came, and the christmas feeling takes us as north as possible! The renditions of the sacred carols ‘GUADETE’ and ‘PER NATUS’ combine all the folk, all the Celtic and all the nordic fantasy elements into one. Have you ever listened a cinematic winter carol? Classical and traditional, they takes us into a magic scenarios of castles and snow, all through choir arrangements and magnificent orchestrations. The album ends with all the faces, textures and styles combined in one. ‘NOËL NOUVELET’ is a song that switches a lot between dramatic vocal moments, subtle orchestra sounds and intense dark transitions. Those elements all in one, marks the difference between any other classic carol, and this masterpiece.
It’s very hard and risky to do something different once you are already place into a style on the metal scene. Nevertheless, LEAH captivated her most beautiful musical essence and took it up to the next level, proving that not everything is about guitars. ANCIENT WINTER is a delightful journey between dreams and winter fantasies. It doesn’t snow where I live, at least it didn’t until I played this record.
