NORTHWARD [REVIEW]
Depués de una larga espera (más para la banda que para nosotros), ahora podemos disfrutar de una tremenda producción musical. Sin duda la unión de Floor Jansen (Nightwish) y Jorn Viggo (Pagan’s mind), es una explosión creativa que podrás disfrutar de inicio a fin. “NORTHWARD” es un disco que pretende ser una muestra increíble de hardrock, y termina siendo mucho, muchísimo más que eso. Muy complejo, versátil y con momentos de montaña rusa. Te pone de un muy humor.
El álbum empieza con mucha fuerza, y con riffs característicos de lo que solemos escuchar en hardrock pero tiene toques frescos y muy únicos, lo que la hace muy diferente. “WHILE LOVE DIED” es definitivamente una canción que no baja nunca de energía y posee estribillos tan bien elaborados, que hace que quieras escucharla de nuevo. Como opening del disco, me parece una decisión muy acertada. Es de ésas canciones que quisiera escucharla en un convertible rojo dando vueltas por el gran cañón por un par de (muchas) veces.
Bajamos un poquito de intensidad y escuchamos como protagonista el asombroso trabajo en guitarra. Jorn Viggo hizo un tremendo arreglo en ésta canción. “GET WHAT YOU GIVE” pareciera ser una canción un poco más lenta, pero la versatilidad en la voz de Floor en diferentes momentos de la canción (a veces suave, a veces un poco agresiva, por momentos potente), la convierten en especie de ‘balada enérgica’. Si no existe el término, ellos lo acaban de inventar.
Siguiendo un poco el estilo de la anterior pero con un tempo un poco más rápido, viene “STORM IN A GLASS” a hacernos disfrutar una linda canción con toques de rock. No tan pesada como las anteriores, si no un poco más suave y alegre. Creo que ésta sería la ideal para levantar los encendedores en un concierto y corearla.
Momentos contrastados. Fuertes guitarras y melodías vocales muy intensas en los coros en conjunto con estrofas más suaves, convierten a “DRIFTING ISLANDS” en la máxima expresión del hardrock como tal en el disco. La combinación de voces es tremenda entre Floor y su hermana, Irene. Por momentos es un poco difícil diferenciarlas porque ambas tienen una capacidad vocal asombrosa, además sus voces convergen de forma perfecta. El trabajo de la guitarra aquí es simplemente espectacular. Creo que es mi favorita hasta ahora.
Luego de un abrupto final, nos encontramos con segundos de sonidos acústicos, seguidos de una melodía vocal más suave, resaltando el color de voz de Floor aún más. Los arreglos de la guitarra son fabulosos en ésta canción, por momentos la convierten en melancólica, y por otros muy, muy enérgica. “PARAGON” es una canción tremendamente versátil e intensa en el mejor de los sentidos. Sorprende con un tremendo solo y una explosión vocal que si tuvieras una peluca, la volaría a 100km de donde estás.
Ahora sí me dieron ganas de saltar y hacer como si tocara a guitarra (porque no la toco). “LET ME OUT” es rápida, dinámica, y presenta un solo espectacular de guitarra, que pone en exposición lo virtuoso que es Jorn Viggo. Es de lejos una de mis favoritas en todo el disco. Ésta canción lo tiene todo. ¡Debería ser single!
¿Alguien más tuvo esa sensación de Country Rock Disco? Pero mucho mucho más pesado. Si bien sigue la misma línea que las anteriores, tiene un diferenciado muy fuerte en la batería que me recuerda las canciones de rock que se podían bailar. Se ve que ni Floor ni Jorn estuvieron limitados a la hora hacer explotar su creatividad artística. Y “BIG BOY” es el resultado de dejar fluir todo.
Hablemos de contrastes. Coros muy fuertes y potentes en guitarra, y melodías vocales muy suaves en las estrofas. “TIMEBOMB” juega con mi ritmo cardíaco (un poco). Es una canción un poco más melódica que las demás, y la voz de Floor es llevada hasta el espacio y los riffs son muy únicos.
Tenemos la primera balada del álbum. “BRIDLE PASSION” es la prueba que para hacer una canción que transmita, no necesitas nada más que una guitarra y una voz cargada de sentimiento. En lo personal jamás había escuchado algo así en Floor, y debo admitir que me encantaría poder escuchar más así. “I NEED” nos despierta de forma violenta y divertida. Dan ganas de bailar un poco en las estrofas. La canción en general es bastante interesante, tiene su propia personalidad. Ésta es la más rápida y potente en todo el tracklist. Me gustó aunque tengo que darle un par de escuchadas más.
Qué mejor forma de cerrar el álbum, que una canción con el mismo mismo nombre de la banda. Instrumentalmente, una de mis favoritas. Es una canción que progresivamente va aumentando en intensidad. Comienza bien suave hasta que a mitad de canción se desencadena toda la potencia que éstos dos músicos son capaces de lograr. “NORTHWARDS” es el perfecto cierre.

After a long wait (more for the band than for us), we can now enjoy a tremendous musical production. Undoubtedly the union of Floor Jansen (Nightwish) and Jorn Viggo (Pagan’s mind) is a creative explosion that you can please our ears from start to finish. “NORTHWARD” is an album that aims to be an incredible show of hardrock, and ends up being much, much more than that. Very complex, versatile and with roller coaster moments. It puts you in a very good mood!
The album starts with a lot of power, and with riffs alike what we usually hear in hardrock, but it has more of a fresh taste and very unique touches which makes it very different from the rest hardrock songs. “WHILE LOVE DIED” is definitely a song that never loses energy and the chorus is so well put together that I can guarantee you would want to listen to it again (and again). As the track opening of the album, I think it was a very wise decision. It is one of those songs that I would like to hear in a red convertible circling the Grand Canyon for a couple of (many) times.
We lower a bit the intensity and enjoy the amazing guitar work as the highlight. Jorn Viggo made a tremendous arrangement in this song. “GET WHAT YOU GIVE” seems to be a slightly slower song, but the versatility in Floor’s voice in different moments of the song (sometimes soft, sometimes a bit aggressive, sometimes powerful), makes it a kind of ‘energetic ballad’. If the term does not exist, they have just invented it with the song. Following a bit the style of the previous song but with a faster tempo, here comes “STORM IN A GLASS” to make us enjoy a beautiful song with rock -style touches. Not as heavy, but with a softer cheerful sound. I think this would be the ideal song to lift the lighters and sing our hearts out on a show.
Contrasting moments. Strong guitar riffs and very intense vocal melodies in the chorus together with softer bridges, make “DRIFTING ISLANDS” the maximum expression of hardrock as such on the album. The combination of voices between Floor’s and his sister’s, Irene, is just tremendous . At first it is a little hard to know which one is singing because both have an amazing vocal ability, and their voices converge perfectly. The guitar work here is simply spectacular. I think it’s my favorite so far.
After an abrupt ending son, we find seconds of acoustic sounds, followed by a much more softer vocal melody, highlighting Floor’s tone voice even more. The guitar arrangements are fabulous in this song, at times they make it melancholic and very, very energetic. “PARAGON” is a tremendously versatile and an intense song in the best of the senses. They surprise us with a fantastic guitar solo and huge vocal explosion at the end, that if you had a wig, it would fly 100km from where you are. Now I really felt like jumping and doing as if I was playing guitar (because I don’t). “LET ME OUT” is fast, dynamic, and presents a spectacular guitar solo, which shows how virtuous Jorn Viggo is as a musician. It is by far one of my favorites on the entire record. This song has everything. It should be a single!
Did anyone else have a Country Rock Disco vibe here? But much much heavier. Although it follows the same line as the previous ones, it has a very strong differentiation in the drums that reminds me of the danceable rock songs. It is seen that neither Floor nor Jorn were limited when exploiting their artistic creativity. And “BIG BOY” is the result of letting everything flow.
Let’s talk about contrasts. Very strong and powerful choruses in guitar, and very soft vocal melodies in the verses. “TIMEBOMB” plays with my heart rate (a little). It’s a song a little more melodic than the others, and Floor’s voice is taken to space and the riffs are very unique. We have the first ballad on the album. “BRILLE PASSION” is the proof that to make a song that transmits, you do not need anything more than a guitar and a voice loaded with feeling. Personally, I’ve never heard anything like this on Floor, and I have to admit that I’d love to hear more like that!
“I NEED” wakes us up in a violent and fun way. It makes you want to dance a bit in the verses. The song in general is quite interesting, it has its own personality. This is the fastest and most powerful in the whole tracklist. I liked it although I have to give it a couple more listened.
And what better way to close the album, than a song with the same name as the band. Instrumentally my favorite. It’s a song that progressively increases in intensity. It starts very smooth until half the song unleashes all the power that these two musicians are able to achieve. It flows in a way you feel the hype increasing.“NORTHWARDS” is THE perfect closure.
