SIRENIA -ARCANE ASTRAL AEONS [REVIEW]
Los noruegos de Sirenia nuevamente vienen a bombarear el mercado del Metal Doom Sinfónico con su noveno disco, “ARCANE ASTRAL AEONS”, lleno de energía y arreglos complejos en todas las canciones, al mejor estilo del compositor Morten Veland. Emmanuelle Zoldán tiene partes muy geniales a nivel vocal, y se explotó su voz en lo mejor posible.
El disco empieza con mucha fuerza. Como es muy característico de Sirenia, lo primero que escuchamos es el fantástico trabajo de los coros y la orquesta en mucha potencia. “IN STYX EMBRACE” es una muy buena forma de arrancar el álbum. De entrada, ya nos dice que nos espera un disco musicalmente complejo, y lleno de cambios de ritmo y tempo (no sería Sirenia si no fuese así).
En comienzo muy melódico, nos encontramos con “INTO THE NIGHT” que tiene (musicalmente) tiene una esencia escandinava muy prominente. Los coros son bastante pegadizos e interesantes y Emmanuelle hace un tremendo trabajo vocal. Tiene una atmósfera mucho menos oscura que otros singles de la banda.
“LOVE LIKE CYANIDE” es para mí es una de las canciones más destacadas del album. No sólo tiene una tremenda orquesta, si no que la estructura de la canción es mucho más dinámica y sus cambios no son tan bruscos. Es de las que definitivamente disfruté más escuchar. Hasta ahora es la que me parece más “catchy” de todas.
En “DESIRE” sentimos ése el “oldschool Sirenia”. Es oscura y pesada, y el uso sintetizadores con temática de circo la hace un tanto distinta a las otras. Incluso tiene una estrofa que está en francés que me parece que le va tremendamente bien a la canción.
“ASPHYXIA” es mucho más rápida y pegajosa en los coros y mucho más dinámica. Hasta ahora mi favorita. En los sintetizadores se siente bastante el toque tétrico de los arreglos de Sirenia. Con “QUEEN OF LIES” tenemos por primera vez en el álbum el uso continuo de los guturales. No es una canción que me voló la cabeza.
Les presento mi favorita: “NOS HEURES SOMBRES”. Enteramente en francés, es una canción que si bien carece de momentos complejos en comparación a otras canciones, su simpleza es lo que le da la belleza que tiene. Debo admitir que Emmanuelle cantando en Francés le da otro toque muy único. Amor a primera escuchada.
Aunque en “THE VOYAGE” se sienten menos la presencia de sintetizadores que caracterizan mucho el sonido de la banda, la canción me recuerda mucho las canciones antiguas. Muy ellos.
“AERODYNE” es una canción un más relajada pero igual de pesada. La orquesta se siente menos que en las anteriores canciones. Necesité un par de escuchadas para poder agarrarle un poco gusto.
“THE TWILIGHT HOUR” es la canción en que pude disfrutar mucho más los arreglos orquestales y corales desde el comienzo,. Vocalmente es tremenda pieza. Y llegando al final del disco, nos encontramos con “GLOWING EMBERS”, en donde los coros tienen mucho más protagonismo y varía en rapidez de forma progresiva. Un arreglo orquestal espectacular y épico. A mi parecer, el mejor del álbum y el que destaca mejor el trabajo del compositor detrás de todo.
En general es un disco muy disfrutable, con arreglos épicos y me resultó mucho más digerible que otros trabajos de Sirenia.

From Norway, Sirenia comes to kick the Symphonic Metal Doom market with their ninth album, “ARCANE ASTRAL AEONS”, full of energy and much more epic arrangements from Morten Veland like we’re used to. Emmanuelle Zoldán has brutal vocal moments in the album as well, and her voice tone shines in the best possible way.
The album starts with a lot of power and strength. Like very Sirenia’s style, the first thing we hear is the fantastic work of the choirs and the orchestration merged with power and fast tempo. “IN STYX EMBRACE” is a very good way to start the album. It tells us that a musically complex album awaits us, with twists and turns with rhythm and tempo (it would not be Sirenia if it we didn’t have that).
In a very melodic beginning, starts “INTO THE NIGHT” with a very musical Scandinavian essence. The chorus are way too catchy and interesting, showing Emmanuelle’s tremendous vocal work. It has a much less dark atmosphere than other singles in the band though.
“LOVE LIKE CYANIDE” is for me one of the most outstanding songs of the album. Not only has a tremendous orchestra, but the structure of the song is much more dynamic and its rhythm twists are not so abrupt. It’s the one I definitely enjoyed listening to the most. Until now it is the one that seems to me most “catchy” of all.
In “DESIRE” we feel that the “old-school Sirenia” is kind of back. It’s dark and heavy, and the use of synthesizers with a circus theme makes it a bit different from the others. It has even en entire verse in French, and that I think it goes tremendously well with the song.
“ASPHYXIA” is much faster with catchy verses and much more dynamic. You can feel the gloomy touch of the Sirenia arrangements with synths in this song!
With “QUEEN OF LIES” we have for the first time on the album the continuous use of powerful gutturals. But It is not a song that blew my mind actually.
I present my favorite: “NOS HEURES SOMBRES”. Entirely in French, it is a song that although doesn’t have complex moments compared to other songs, its simplicity is what stands out the best. I must admit that Emmanuelle singing in French gives a very unique touch to this song. Love at first heard.
Although in “THE VOYAGE” you can feel less the presence of synthesizers that characterize much the sound of the band, the song reminds me a lot the old songs. It’s a very Sirenia song.
“AERODYNE” is a song more relaxed but equally heavy. It has less orchestra than the previous songs. I needed to listen to it a couple of times to actually like the song.
“THE TWILIGHT HOUR” is the song in which I could enjoy much more the orchestral and choir arrangements from the start. Vocally it is a tremendous musical piece.
And getting to the end of the album, “GLOWING EMBERS”, where the choirs have much more prominence and gets more power in a progressive way. A spectacular and epic orchestral arrangement. In my opinion, the best of the album and the one that best emphasizes the work of the composer behind every detail.
In general it is a very enjoyable album, with epic arrangements. I found it much more digestible than other works of Sirenia.
